Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on different words we use for travel.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful travel words, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to two people planning a trip to Rome.
So let’s start!

Woman: Travel
Man: You can only use this word to talk about the general activity of moving from one place to another. Remember it can also be used as a verb. Now listen to two examples of this word:
Woman: Foreign travel is very popular these days.
Woman: I travel a lot with my job.

Woman: Journey
Man: We use this when we talk about going from one particular place to another. A journey can be long, or short but repeated. For example:
Woman: My journey to work is a nightmare with all the road works.
Woman: I went on a lovely train journey through Italy last year.

Woman: Trip
Man: We often use trip when we are thinking about the whole visit (including your stay in a place and your journey there and back). A trip may be short, i.e. a day trip, or longer, i.e. a trip around the world, and can be for business or pleasure. Listen to these two examples:
Woman: Shall we go on a shopping trip to London?
Woman: I’ve got to go on a business trip to New York.

Woman: Excursion
Man: This is a short organised trip you go on with a group of people. For example:
Woman: We went to England last year, and went on a full-day excursion of London on an open-top double-decker bus, it was wonderful.
Woman: My daughter’s gone on an excursion with her school to visit Etna.

Woman:	Now you will listen to a conversation between two people planning a trip to Rome

Woman: I’m so excited! I’ve never been to Rome before, are you sure you can get the time off work for this trip?
Man: Yes, we can leave Thursday evening and come back on Monday afternoon.
Woman: Thursday evening? But, I didn’t think there were any evening flights to Rome.
Man: I thought we could take the train over night.
Woman: Isn’t it a long journey by train, It takes at least 8 hours.
Man: It does, but, we can sleep on the train and arrive in Rome early in the morning, that way we’ll have more time to explore Rome. We can travel back by plane if you like?
Woman: Okay then that sounds fine! What are we going to do there? You know Rome so well.
Man: Well, as it’s your first trip to Rome I’ve booked you on a VIP excursion on Saturday, so you’ll get to see all the sights in one go. Then we can return to anything that you really like.
Woman: That’s fantastic!

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to check in at an airport.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning the English words and phrases you need to know before you check in at a foreign airport.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to check in for a flight.
So let’s start!

Woman:	Imagine you are in a foreign country and you need to check in for your flight. What do you need to know before you check in? Here are some useful phrases you need to remember:
Your personal documents: that is, your passport, ticket and boarding pass.
Your luggage: - suitcases, bags, hand luggage, brief case – do you have any excess luggage?
The luggage weight restrictions of the airline,
Items prohibited to carry, such as manicure sets, razor blades, knives etc.
What time do you have to board the plane, and where is the gate?

Woman: Now let’s listen to these useful words in the dialogue: pay attention to what you’ll be asked, and what you need to answer.

Woman: Good morning, thank you for using Splendid airlines, may I see your passport and flight ticket please?
Man: Yes, certainly, here you are.
Woman:	Do you have any luggage to check in?
Man:	Yes, 2 suitcases.
Woman: Could you put them on the conveyor please?
Man: Ok.
Woman: I’m, afraid your luggage weighs over 30 kilos, and the airline policy is 25 kilos per person, you’ll have to pay excess baggage.
Man:	Oh, I see, how much is that?
Woman: It’s 7 euros a kilo. So that will be 35 euros in total. Did you pay for your flight by credit card?
Man:	Yes,
Woman: Well, I can charge it direct to your credit card if you like.
Man: Ok then.
Woman: That’s done. Sorry for the inconvenience sir, but, it is advisable to read our restrictions before flying. Have you left your luggage unattended at all?
Man: Excuse me?
Woman:	Have your suitcases been with you at all times since you packed them, or have you left them with other people? And are you carrying any metal objects or electrical equipment?
Man:	No, No, I packed my bags this morning at the hotel, and they’ve been with me ever since. And, no I’m not carrying any metal or electrical objects.
Woman:	OK, and do you have any hand luggage sir?
Man:	Just this brief case.
Woman:	Are you carrying any sharp objects, or other objects prohibited by the airlines, such as nail scissors or razor blades?
Man:	No, I just have some personal documents in my bag.
Woman:	Ok, thank you, Mr Johnson. Would you like a window or an aisle seat?
Man:	Err, a window seat please.
Woman: That’s fine, Ok, here is your boarding card, you need to go to gate 22 at 10.25am, as boarding will start at 10.30am. Enjoy your flight and thank you for flying with Splendid Airlines.
Man: Thank you, but where is gate 22 please.
Woman:	You need to go up the escalator and through the doors on the left. There is a sign to direct you.
Man:	Thank you!

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to beat your flying fears
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English words, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART Two: you’ll be listening to information on flying fears and how to overcome them.
So let’s start!

Woman: Are you scared of flying and you don’t know how to express yourself? Try these expressions:

Woman: I’m petrified of flying.
Man: This means you are very frightened. For example:
Woman: I’m not scared of flying, but I’m petrified of going to the dentist.
Man: No, I’m not afraid of flying either, but I’m petrified when I drive in Italy.

Woman: I panic when the plane takes off.
Man: Panic means you have a sudden feeling of fear that cannot be controlled and stops you thinking clearly. Take off is a phrasal verb, and in this example it means when the planes leaves the ground.
Woman: I always panic when I have an exam.
Man: I panic whenever I have another birthday, I don’t like getting older, but it’s better than the alternative I suppose.

Woman: I always worry if the plane is going to crash.
Man: A crash means to have an accident in a vehicle.
Woman: My husband is going to kill me. I’ve crashed his car again.
Man: Don’t worry, I’ve had 4 car crashes this year, luckily nobody was injured.
Woman: I’m scared of hijackers.
Man: Hijackers are people who take control of a plane by force, usually for political reasons
Woman: I always sit at the back of the plane, and watch the people to see if anybody looks like a hijacker.
Man: With all the extra security checks at airports these days, it’s unlikely someone could hijack a plane.

Woman: Now let’s listen to an article adapted from CNN about the fear of flying.

People who have a fear of going up in an airplane have to live with flying fears. There are a few specialized centres, such as the Fear of Flying Clinic in California, which offer therapy and workshops designed to help people overcome flying anxiety.
A pilot, a mechanic and an air traffic controller explain the basics of aerodynamics and flight safety procedures and take clients on a tour of the control tower and maintenance area A therapist also works with participants to help them determine what their base phobia is. The seminar ends with a short flight.
The experts also suggest a few tips on how to conquer a fear of flying:

Learn relaxation techniques that may help you stay calm;

Introduce yourself to the crew and let them know that flying makes you uncomfortable). They may be able to offer some extra assistance during your flight;

Dress comfortably and eat before you fly;

Don’t wait until the hour before the flight to start preparing yourself for the journey.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to book a flight.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning the English grammar you need to know to talk about schedules and flight confirmations.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to book a flight.
So let’s start!

Woman: We use the present simple tense to talk about facts, habits and “things in general”. Now listen to three examples of this rule:
Man:	I live in a big city.
Man:	I always get up early in the morning.
Man:	Water boils at 100 degrees.
Woman:	However, we also use the present simple to talk about timetables and things that are scheduled. For example, listen to these two sentences:
Man:	The train to Paris leaves at 10am.
Man:	The coach from London arrives at 7am.
Woman:	When we want to talk about future arrangements, that is, future actions we are 100% certain about, we use the present continuous. Now listen to three examples of this rule:
Man:	I’ve bought my ticket, I’m flying to England on the 27th.
Man:	I’m having my hair cut at 11am tomorrow.
Man:	We’re visiting my in-laws on Sunday.
Woman:	Now let’s listen to these tenses in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.
Imagine you are at a travel agent’s and you want to book a flight to Dublin, but you can’t decide if you want to travel in the morning or the evening.

Woman: Good morning, how can I help you?
Man: Can you tell me what time the flights to Dublin are please?
Woman:	Are you flying on a weekday or at the weekend?
Man:	On a Friday.
Woman: Ok, there are two flights, one leaves at 10.30am, and the other leaves at 3pm.
Man: How long is the flight?
Woman:	It takes 3 hours.
Man:	So, if I leave in the morning, I’ll arrive at lunch time, and for dinner, if I take the afternoon flight. Mmm, I think, I’ll book the morning flight please, just one-way.
Woman: OK, if you can just write down your details here, and I’ll print your ticket for you.
Woman: Here’s your ticket Mr Johnson, you are flying at 10.30am on Friday.
Man: Yippee! I’m going to Ireland in two days.
Woman: I hope you enjoy your trip.
Man: Oh, I will, I’m visiting some old college friends, and we’re having a big party.
WoMan: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

Il present simple è usato per parlare di abitudini o eventi che avvengono ad un orario prestabilito:
I never carry too much luggage with me when I'm travelling.
Our plane leaves at 9 o'clock.

Se però vogliamo parlare di progetti o programmi che abbiamo stabilito personalmente, usiamo il present continuous, che in questo caso serve a esprimere un futuro programmato:
I’m flying to London next week.
We’re going to the airport at 7.

Woman: Departure Hall
Man: This is the part of the airport you go to after you have checked in. You can only enter here if you have a boarding card and are going on a flight.
Woman: Well I guess this is as far as I can go now, we are at the departures hall, have a good flight and call me when you arrive.
Man: Gosh! Look at that queue! It’s going to take me ages just to get into the departures hall, I hope I’m not late for my flight.
Woman: Security Check
Man: This is at the entrance to the departure hall, and you will have to show your boarding card, passport, and then put any hand luggage through a machine to be scanned for dangerous objects, while you walk through a metal detector.
Woman: I hate the security check something always beeps when I walk through the metal detector.
Man: The last time I was at the security check I had to open all my hand luggage, I had some medicine, and they thought I was carrying drugs.
Woman: Boarding card
Man: This card is given to you when you check in. It has your personal information on it and your seat number on the airplane. It will also state what time you need to go to your departure gate and the number of the gate.
Woman: I always put my boarding card inside my passport after check in, so I don’t lose it, as you are always asked for it so many times.
Man: I never understand why they still have a smoking symbol next to the seat number on boarding cards you can’t smoke on an airplane anymore.
Woman: Departure gate
Man: This is the place you get on the plane. Pay attention to the number of the gate, and ensure you know how to get there. In big airports there are directions and also advice on how many minutes it will take you to walk to your departure gate.
Woman: It says to go to departure gate number 19, 45 minutes before boarding.
Man: Oh, I never go to the departure gate until the last moment, I can’t stand sitting around in a hall when there are so many shops and bars to explore.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again.
