Woman: Shall we go for a drink?
Man: The expression “Shall we..?” is very useful to make suggestions on what to do on your first date. For example:
Man: Hi, it’s a bit cold, shall we go somewhere warm?
Woman: That would be nice.
Man: Shall we go to the bar over there? It looks like a fun place.
Woman: What would you like?
Man: This is a polite way of asking someone what they want to drink or eat. Now listen:
Man: What would you like to drink?
Woman: I’d like a martini please.
Woman: Do you like this bar?
Man: This simple kind of question can be used to find out about your date’s likes and dislikes. Listen to this example
Woman: Do you like it here?
Man: It’s ok, but I’m hungry, do you like Mexican food?
Woman: I’ve never tried it before, but I don’t like fish.
Woman: Have you ever been abroad?
Man: This expression can be used to find out about your date’s past experiences. Now listen:
Woman: MMM. This tastes good. Have you been here before?
Man: Yes, I have been here a few times.
Woman: Have you ever been to Mexico?
Woman: What do you do in your free time?
Man: This is a good way to keep a conversation going and to find out about your date’s hobbies, and what kind of person they really are. For example:
Woman: What do you do in your free time?
Man: Well, when I’m not working, I go to the gym and I like travelling when I can. What about you, what do you do in your free time?
Woman: I go jogging and I love reading.
Woman: Did you enjoy the evening?
Man: This is a simple way to find out if your date likes you. Listen to this example:
Woman: I really enjoyed tonight, did you enjoy the evening?
Man: Yes, I really enjoyed myself.
Woman: Can I take your number? What are you doing next Friday?
Man: These are good questions when the end of the date is approaching, and you have to decide if you want to see each other again. Now listen to this example:
Man: Can I take your number?
Woman: You already have it.
Man: Well, what are you doing next Friday?
Woman: Aaah, I’m washing my hair….but I’ll call you………..

Woman: Imagine you are on an English course in a foreign country and you would like to get to know some of your classmates better. What do you say? Here are some useful questions to help you break the ice and maybe even invite someone out:
Woman : What’s your name?
Where are you from?
How long are you staying here?
Are you enjoying the course?
Why are you studying English?
What do you do in the afternoons after the course?
Do you mind if I sit here?
Do you fancy going for a drink?
What are you doing tonight?
Would you like to go for a drink?
Woman: Now you’ll hear a short conversation between an Italian and a Finnish student on an English course.
Man: Hi, do you mind if I sit here? I saw you earlier in the lesson on phrasal verbs. Are you enjoying the course?
Woman: Yes, thanks, but, that lesson was confusing.
Man: Yes, I thought so too, it’s my first day here as I arrived late, and I didn’t understand anything. When did you arrive?
Woman: I arrived last Friday, and started the course on Monday.
Man: Where are you from?
Woman: I’m from Finland, and my name is Elma, where are you from?
Man: I’m Francesco, and I’m from Italy. Why are you learning English?
Woman: I’m doing a degree in Travel and Tourism and want to work in a hotel, so I have to speak English. What about you?
Man: Well, I’m hoping to go to university in England, so I really need to improve my English. What are you doing this afternoon? There’s nothing on the schedule.
Woman: Well, I usually revise what we study in the morning, but, I’m feeling tired after that lesson.
Man: Well, if you are not busy, would you like to go out? We could explore the city centre perhaps?
Woman: That would be nice I haven’t seen anything but books since I arrived here.
Man: Well, what about starting with one of those famous English pubs? Do you fancy a drink to relax and unwind from that lovely lesson?
Woman: That would be great! Let’s go!

Woman: First you’ll be listening to different ways on how to express how you feel about someone.
Man: I really fancy that girl over there.
Woman: This is an expression to say you are physically attracted to someone. For example:
Man: I’ve fancied Anna for ages. Do you think she’s interested?
Woman: Well, I heard she fancies you too, so why don’t you ask her out?
Man: I’m falling for her.
Woman: This means you are strongly attracted to somebody, and you are falling in love.
Man: I’ve been seeing Anna for 2 months now. I think I’m falling for her.
Woman: Oh my gosh! You’ve finally fallen in love.
Man: I’m head over heels in love!
Woman: This is an expression used to say that you love somebody very much.
Man: I’m not in love, I’m head over heels in love, I can’t sleep, eat….
Woman: Heh, be careful, is she in love with you too?
Man: It’s just a crush.
Woman: This is almost an obsession, and you feel intense love for somebody for a short period of time. Listen to this short conversation
Man: Maybe it’s just a crush, I guess, I don’t really know her that well.
Woman: Well, my colleague has had a crush on George Clooney for years, she collects all his photos, videos all his films, her husband thinks she’s gone mad. It’s not just kids who have crushes.
Woman: Imagine you have met a girl on your 2 week English course, you’ve been dating, but the holiday romance is coming to the end, how do you continue the relationship?
Man: Hi, I’m calling you for some advice.
Woman: What’s up? You sound really down.
Man: I’ve fallen for Elma, do you remember the girl I met on the English course.
Woman: Crikey! I thought it was just a fling. Are you sure you don’t just have a crush? You hardly know her.
Man: No, I feel sick, I’ve got butterflies in my stomach and I can’t eat. I’ve fallen hook, line and sinker.
Woman: Does she feel the same?
Man: Well I know she fancies me, but, I don’t know if she’s head over heels like me.
Woman: But, if she lives in Finland and you live in Italy, how can it possibly work? Are you sure it’s not just a holiday romance, with all the glamour of being away from home?
Man: Gosh, you are so cynical.
Woman: No, Peter, I’m just trying to be realistic, and if you feel this way, you must tell her how you feel.
Man: Okay, I will tonight, as we only have 2 days left here, then what….
Woman: Heh, calm down, have some courage, if it’s meant to be it will be, and you can stay in touch by email until you meet again.
Man: Long distance love. That’s typical of my luck, now I wonder if she’s got a webcam…

Man: This is very politically correct. But, implies a person lives with somebody or is married. For example:
Man: Are you single?
Woman: No.
Man: Are you married?
Woman: No, but, I have a partner, we’ve been living together for 5 years now.

These are some of the excuses that people give for being single, but there are people everywhere and many of them are also looking for a partner. Man: This is a date when you are meeting somebody you have never seen before, this could be organised by friends or somebody you have met on the internet.
Woman: I went on a blind date last night.
Man: Urrgh! How was it? I went on a blind date last year, it was terrible.
Woman: Dating
Man: This is an expression used to saying you are going out with someone regularly on dates. You can say:
Woman: How long have you been dating Samantha?
Man: I’ve been dating her for 6 months now, it’s getting pretty serious.
Woman: Dating agency
Man: This is an agency that for a fee arranges dates for people. They put you on a data base then recommend suitable partners. For example:
Woman: Hello, Sweethearts dating agency, how can I help you?
Man: Hello I’d like to join your dating agency.
Woman: Now let’s listen to a conversation on how to get a date
Man: I’m sick of being single.
Woman: Why don’t you join an internet dating agency?
Man: No way! I’m not that desperate.
Woman: Well, you’re always on the internet, don’t you ever meet anyone in those chat rooms?
Man: Actually I’ve been chatting to a nice girl for a few weeks now.
Woman: So, ask her out on a date, what are you waiting for?
Man: I can’t I’m too shy, and I don’t know what she looks like, she could be horrid.
Woman: Don’t you have a web-cam?
Man: No.
Woman: Well, it’ll be a blind date then, but, if you don’t ask her, you’ll never know, and what have you got to lose?
Man: I suppose so, but what if she’s already dating somebody?
Woman: Well if you don’t ask her out, you’ll never know.
Man: I suppose so. I’ll ask her if she’s doing anything at the weekend.

Per tenere a mente la struttura della frase interrogativa in inglese, prova a paragonarla a un treno.
In testa al treno troviamo l’ausiliare, cui seguono gli altri vagoni (il soggetto, il verbo, i complementi)
Do you like your job?
Is she French?
Senza l’ausiliare, l’interrogativa non può camminare.
L’ausiliare può essere preceduto da una delle parole WH- (What, Why, When, Where, Who) oppure da How:
Where do you come from?
Where did you go yesterday?
Ricorda che:
What può essere seguito da un sostantivo. Ad esempio:
What time is it?
How può essere seguito da un aggettivo o un avverbio. Ad esempio:
How old are you?
How often do you go to the cinema?
