Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on abbreviations used in SMS messages and internet chat rooms.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning some useful abbreviations.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to decipher modern messages.
So let’s start!

Woman: Imagine you are communicating in English via mobile phone or the internet and the person you are communicating with doesn’t use full words what do these abbreviations mean?

B4U = before you

CU = see you

CUl8r = see you later

RU = are you?

UR= you are

4 u = for you

Y = why

LOL = lots of love or laughter, so be careful on the context.

Woman: Now let’s listen to two people trying to understand a text message:
Man : I can’t believe she texted me back
Woman: You see, with modern technology, anything is possible, what did she say?
Man : Mmm, that’s the problem, she hasn’t written in full words, she’s used all these strange letters, and I’m not sure what she is trying to say.
Woman : OK, well read it out then, and I’ll help you.
Man : U-R a G-R-8 guy,
Woman : That means you’re a great guy, continue……
Man : What R-U- doing?
Woman : She wants to know what you are doing………..
Man : Okay, smarty pants, and what does this mean, B 4 you go to uni, text me.
Woman : She wants you to send her an SMS before your first lesson at university.
Man: Wait, she’s also put if UR not busy, C U @ 8 @ Lu’s
Woman : Gosh, you’re hopeless it means if you’re not busy she’ll be waiting for you at Luigi’s bar.
Man: Oh, and L O L X X X
Woman : Well, that could mean what a laugh, but as she’s put kisses it probably means lots of love…………..she’s interested.
Man: How shall I reply?
Woman : Give me the phone, here goes…. Hope UR Ok, sounds GR8, CU@8 don’t B L8T. LOL xxxxxxxxx
Man : Did you send that message?

Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to communicate with your mobile phone.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful telephone vocabulary, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!

Woman: I’ll call you.
Man: This means you will telephone someone.
Woman: Heh, how are you? I haven’t seen you for ages, you don’t call me anymore.
Man: I’m sorry, I’ve been busy.
Woman: Well, shall I call you at the weekend, we can go out?
Man: Well, I’m not sure if I’m working, don’t call me, I’ll call you.
Woman: I’ll give you a ring.
Man: This also means that you’ll telephone somebody.
Woman: What time do you finish work?
Man: I’m not sure, I have a meeting, but I’ll give you a ring when I get in.
Woman: I’ll call you back.
Man: This means that you will return a phone call, or continue a conversation later, as your telephone conversation has been interrupted.
Woman: Well it was great to talk to you again, but I’ve got to get off the phone, I think my boss has just arrived I’ll call you back later.
Man: OK, but, call me after 7, as I’ll be in a meeting.
Woman: Hang up
Man: This means to end a telephone call.
Woman: Heh, what happened? I was talking to you and the phone went dead, did you hang up on me?
Man: Sorry, I had to hang up, my boss walked in.

Woman: Text me
Man: This means to send a short SMS message to somebody’s phone.
Woman: Text me when you’ve finished work and we can organise something.
Man: Ok, I’ll text you as soon as I get out of my meeting.

Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English words, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to an article on the development of the “Blue tooth” technology.
So let’s start!

Woman: What’s a Bluetooth? Do you put it on your ear or your lap? Now listen and learn.

Woman: Bluetooth.
Man: This is the name given to the strange ear piece that you see many drivers wearing today, looking as though they are walking around on Star Trek. For example:
Woman: What on earth have you got on your ear?
Man: It’s my new Bluetooth. Look my phone’s ringing and no hands, it even knows if I’m at home or in my car.

Woman: Lap top computers.
Man: This is a portable computer. Lap means the top part of your legs, and that is where the name originates from, as you put it on your lap or a table to work on when you are out of your office or home. Listen to these 2 examples:
Woman: I don’t know what I’d do without my laptop, it’s so handy, I can work on the train, at the beach, it’s even connected to my Bluetooth.
Man: I preferred life before laptops, I knew when my boss gave me one, he expected me to do even more work after office hours.

Woman: Wireless technology.
Man: This literally means no wires. For example, telephones and remote controls. Bluetooth networking is also wireless, and transmits data via low-power radio waves. Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: I wish things had wires on still, I can’t find the phone or the remote control.
Man: Stop moaning, you love wireless technology, before you used to complain that you had to sit on the stairs to talk on the phone. The problem now is, you wander around the house chatting away, and forget where you put things.
Woman: Unite a wide range of devices.
Man: A device is another word for a piece of equipment. The expression to unite a wide range of devices means to connect a lot of different pieces of equipment together. For example:
Woman: My Bluetooth is amazing it unites my mobile phone to my house phone and all my computers it always knows where I am
Man: I don’t understand this device, I have techno-phobia.

Woman: Now let’s listen to the development of the fascinating blue tooth technology, adapted from devhood.com.
Bluetooth technology can unite a wide range of devices such as laptop computers and mobile phones together wirelessly

But how did this strange name originate? In 994, a group of engineers from Ericsson developed the technology to connect mobile phones to their accessories wirelessly. Then, in 998, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group was formed, and it included industry giants such as IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba, who then joined Ericsson. The group worked on developing a technology that would connect multiple hardware and software platforms.

This project was named Bluetooth after the Danish Viking Harald Blatand, who united and controlled Denmark and Norway during the 0th century Translated, the name “Blatand” means “Bluetooth.”

In questa lezione scoprirai l’origine di una parola molto usata oggi.

Bluetooth technology can unite (unire) a wide range (gamma) of devices (apparecchiature) such as laptop computers (portatili) and mobile phones (cellulari) together wirelessly (senza fili).

But how did this strange name originate? In 1994, a group of engineers from Ericsson developed (sviluppò) the technology to connect mobile phones to their accessories wirelessly. Then, in 1998, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group was formed (venne formato), and it included industry giants (colossi) such as IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba, who then joined (si unirono a) Ericsson. The group worked on developing a technology that would connect (avrebbe collegato) multiple hardware and software platforms.

This project was named (fu chiamato) Bluetooth after (dal nome di) the Danish Viking Harald Blatand, who united and controlled Denmark and Norway during the 10th century (secolo). Translated (tradotto), the name “Blatand” means “Bluetooth.” (dente blu).

Woman: Now you are going to learn some useful telephone expressions.
Woman: Hello, Sheffield Computer Services, Susan Jones speaking.
Man: When somebody answers the phone for a company, this is a standard introduction, to state the company name, and then the person who is speaking. For example:
Woman: Good afternoon, Joanna speaking, how can I help you?
Man: Hello, BNT computers, George speaking.
Woman: Hello, Could I speak to Jeremy Fuller please?
Man: This is a standard telephone expression, when you want to speak to a particular person. Listen to these examples:
Woman: Hello, Could I speak to Mrs. Johnson please.
Man: Could I speak to the HR manager please?
Woman: Hold the line please.
Man: This means “wait a moment,” and is a standard telephone expression, while the secretary checks if a person is available. Listen to this example:
Woman: Could I speak to Mr Jones please?
Man: Hold the line please, while I see if he is available.
Woman: One moment, I’m putting you through.
Man: This expression means that you are being connected to the person you requested to speak to. Listen to this example:
Woman: OK sir, I’m just putting you through to Mr Jones now.Man2Hello, Mr Jones speaking.Woman: I’m afraid he’s out at the moment, can I take a message?
Man: If the person is unavailable, this is a standard offer for you to leave a message for that person. For example:
Man: Hello, could I speak to Mr Jones please?
Woman: I’m afraid he’s out at the moment, can I take a message?

Woman: Imagine you need to phone a company in England for information for your studies, or even work experience, naturally you’ll be nervous, but don’t worry, English telephone language is very standardised. Now you’ll listen to a student making a phone call to an English company.

Woman: Good afternoon, Wilson’s Silver Ltd. Judy speaking, how can I help you?
Man: Hello, I’d like to speak to Mrs. Goodacre please.
Woman: May I ask who’s calling?
Man: Yes, my name is Joe Lawson.
Woman: Hold the line please. Ok, I’m just putting you through Mr Lawson
Man: Thank you.
Woman2: Hello, Sally Goodacre here,
Man: Hello, my name is Joe Lawson and the reason for my call is that I’m doing my thesis on the history of silver making, and I wondered if I could visit your company and see some of the original silver works.
Woman2: Certainly, we were one of the first silver makers in Sheffield, and you’re welcome to come for a tour. When would you like to visit?
Man: Well, I’ll have to arrange my flights, but, if next Tuesday’s okay for you?
Woman2: It shouldn’t be a problem, call me when you’ve booked your flight, and then we can confirm an appointment, so I can organise everything for you.
Man: Thank you very much, Goodbye.
Woman2: Goodbye, and I look forward to meeting you.

PART ONE: you’ll be learning the English grammar functions of CAN to talk about ability, possibility, and also how to make requests
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to a conversation on how to choose an international phone card.
So let’s start!

Woman: We use “can + the infinitive” to say that somebody has the ability to do something, or that something is possible. Listen to these three examples:
Man: Can you speak English?
Woman: Yes, I can speak a little English.
Man: I can see Mount Etna from my hotel room.
Woman: The negative of can is cannot, but, we usually use the contracted form can’t. For example:
Woman: I’m sorry I can’t go out tonight I have too much work to do.
Man: I can’t use my mobile phone, it’s too complicated.
Woman: We can also use “can+infinitive” to make requests. Listen to these two questions:
Woman: Can you open the window please?
Man: Can I have a glass of water please.
Man: A more polite way to make requests is to use “could” For example:
Woman: Could you give me a hand?
Man: Could I see the wine list please?

Woman: Now let’s listen to the use of can in the dialogue: pay attention to how it is used.
Imagine you want to buy an international phone card, but you are not sure which card to buy.
Woman: Good morning, can I help you?
Man: Yes, I want to buy a phone card.
Woman: Which country do you want to call?
Man: Italy.
Woman: Well you can use any of these cards here.
Man: Can I use them with a mobile phone?
Woman: You can, but a £10 card will only give you 20 minutes if you use a mobile phone, but, 3 hours if use a normal phone.
Man: Can you tell me if there is a card that I can use with my mobile?
Woman: You can use the “Go Europe” card, let me just check how many minutes you’ll get.
Woman: Ok, with a £10 card you can call Italy for hour and 20 minutes.
Man: Ok, Could I have two please?
Woman: Certainly, here you are.
Man: Thank you, can you tell me how to get to the train station please?

Leggendo questa lezione scoprirai le diverse funzioni del verbo CAN

Leggi queste frasi. Quale idea esprime il verbo CAN in ognuna di esse?

My little sister is only 5, but she can use a mobile phone!

I can’t talk to you right now. I’m busy.

Can I leave a message?

In queste frasi, CAN è usato per:
• parlare di capacità e abilità;
• esprimere possibilità;
• fare richieste.

Ricorda che CAN è un verbo modale:
• funge da ausiliare;
• resta invariato anche alla terza persona singolare (She can call me);
• è seguito dalla forma base del verbo (I can’t talk to you right now);
• la forma negativa è CAN'T.

Per fare delle richieste in modo più formale e cortese, usiamo la forma COULD (Could I speak to Ann, please?)
