Farmacia - Vocabolario

Nella lezione di oggi troverai il lessico da utilizzare per acquistare dei farmaci.

Chemist’s: a place where medicines are sold. In Britain, a chemist’s shop also sells toiletries and cosmetics.

Prescription: a written statement from a doctor requesting medicines for a patient.

Medication: a substance used to treat illness.

Drug: general word for “medication”.

Drugs sold over the counter: drugs for which a medical prescription is not necessary.

Painkiller: medication that you take to stop physical suffering (e.g. a headache).

Plaster (USA: Band-Aid): a small strip of sticky material which you use to protect cuts on your body.

Gauze: a strip of soft cloth that you use to cover a graze on your body.

Paracetamol: a bland drug you take to relieve pain and fever.

Antacid: a substance that helps you relieve stomachache.

Tablet/pill: a small round drug which is meant to be taken with some water.

Cough mixture: a syrup that you take to relieve cough and a sore throat.

La lezione di oggi ti illustrerà alcuni aspetti dell’uso del genitivo sassone.

In inglese è possibile rendere il complemento di specificazione con una particolare struttura detta genitivo sassone o “possessivo con ‘s”:

Mary’s bag La borsa di Mary

London’s monuments I monumenti di Londra

Yesterday’s newspapers I giornali di ieri

St Paul’s Cathedral La cattedrale di San Paolo

The chemist’s La farmacia (il negozio del farmacista)

The cat’s tail La coda del gatto

The company’s logo Il logo della compagnia

Il genitivo sassone indica l’appartenenza a persone o gruppi di persone, paesi e città, elementi temporali. Non si usa con le cose.

Il genitivo sassone si forma nel modo seguente:

• il possessore (London) passa al primo posto
• la ‘s sostituisce of
• la cosa posseduta segue la ‘s.

Per i sostantivi plurali, si aggiunge solo l’apostrofo (es, the girls’ books). Fanno eccezione i plurali irregolari (es, the women’s voices).

Questa forma di possessivo si usa anche per gli esercizi commerciali, anche se oggi molti parlanti tendono a ometterlo.

I met Mary at the hairdresser(’s) yesterday
OR Ieri ho incontrato Mary dal parrucchiere.

Is there a chemist (’s) near here?
OR C’è una farmacia qui vicino?

If you describe somebody or something as a pain in the neck, you mean that they are extremely annoying or irritating. Jim’s mother is a pain in the neck. She calls him every morning at 7 o’clock, even on Sundays!

If you touch a sore spot you mention something which causes embarrassment for someone or which upsets them. When I asked Mary about Tom I realized I had touched a sore spot: she was still in love with him.

If you sweeten the pill, you try and make it easier for somebody to accept an unpleasant or difficult situation. The band had to cancel the concert, but they tried to sweeten the pill of disappointment by promising their fans they would reschedule it soon.

If you describe something or a situation as a bitter pill to swallow, you mean that it is unpleasant or difficult to accept. To meet Alison’s new boyfriend was a bitter pill to swallow for John.

With the advent of the internet, thousands of powerful drugs (farmaci) can be bought (acquistati) online.
While the net is home to (ospita) many legitimate pharmacies, it is also home to a number of e-pharmacies (farmacie elettroniche) that operate illegally selling (vendendo) drugs to anyone willing to (disposto a) pay for them.
Anyone can buy treatments (cure) for cancer, impotence or depression and other medicines that are generally only available (disponibili) with a prescription (ricetta medica).
The pharmaceutical industry says it is concerned (preoccupata) but powerless (impotente): websites that operate in countries with tight rules (regole severe) can be shut down (chiusi), but other websites ship (spediscono) drugs from countries where a prescription is not required under the law (per legge).
Doctors fear (temono) that bringing this phenomenon under control may be impossible.
“We need to educate patients about the dangers (pericoli) of buying medicines over the internet” said a spokesman (portavoce) for the British Medical Association, “People should not be taking medicines without (senza) medical advice (parere)”.
