Università - Grammatica
La lezione di oggi ti illustrerà l’uso dell’articolo determinativo the con i nomi di edifici.
Leggi le frasi seguenti. Qual è la differenza tra loro?
- “Does your sister go to university? ”
“Yes, she studies Biology”. - “Excuse me, how do I get to the university?”
“You can get a number 45 bus from here”.
Nel secondo esempio, ci riferiamo all’università in quanto luogo fisico specifico, dunque utilizziamo l’articolo determinativo.
La stessa regola si applica a college, prison, hospital e church.
Alison had an accident yesterday. She’s in hospital now.
I went to the hospital this morning to visit her.
Ricorda che se la parola College o University è preceduta da un nome proprio o geografico, l’articolo si omette:
She has applied to study French at London University (The University of London).

Pronuncia - Vocabolario
Scopri la differenza fra fonetica e fonologia, oltre ad alcuni termini utili per capire lo studio della pronuncia dei suoni inglesi.
Phonetic terminology made simple………
Phonetics is the study of physical sounds and the human voice. It is concerned with the properties of speech sounds (phones) and of non-speech sounds and their production and perception.
Phonology, as opposed to phonetics, is the study of sound systems and abstract sound units, such as phonemes.
Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound in a language which can distinguish two words, for example, “can” and “fan”, these words only differ with initial sound /k/ and /f/. But “ban” and “bin” differ only with their vowel sound / ɪ / and / æ /
RP means “Received Pronunciation.” This is a standard “BBC English” pronunciation used, for the sounds of phonetic spellings.
In a bilingual dictionary you can find the standard pronunciation for each word, transcribed following the IPA conventions.
IPA is an acronym meaning International Phonetic Association.

Pronuncia - Tecniche di pronuncia
Con questa lezione capirai le differenze di pronuncia fra suoni molto simili per un parlante italiano.
On the British Isles, school children have numerous reading and spelling tests, to perfect the pronunciation of words, so from an early age, they master the difficulties of pronunciation.
However, for foreign students there are numerous techniques that can be used to improve their pronunciation, and to learn some of the phonetic symbols at the same time.
One simple technique is “Minimal Pair Practice“.
See the example below:
| /ɪ/ | /i:/ |
|---|---|
| Live Ship Lick Bin |
Leave Sheep Leak Bean |
Another technique is to compare the sounds of 3 words:
See the example below:
| /əʊ/ | /ɔ/ | /ɒ/ |
|---|---|---|
| Coat Boat Won’t |
Caught Bought Worn |
Cot Botch Watch |
