Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on when to use “in case” and when to use “if”.<br />Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:<br />PART ONE: you’ll be learning the difference between “in case” and “if”.<br />PART TWO: you’ll be listening to a couple preparing to go on holiday.<br />So let’s start!</em>
 </p> <p>
<em>Woman: 	Do you know when to use “in case” and when to use “if”? If not listen and learn.	<br />Woman: 	“In case” is not the same as “if”. We use “in case” to say why somebody does something. You do something now “in case” something happens later. It gives a reason for the action. You do something because it is possible something will happen.<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I’ll give you my phone number in case you need to contact me.<br />Man:	You should insure your luggage in case it is stolen.<br />Man:	I will photocopy my passport in case I lose it.</p>
<p>Woman:	“In case” appears similar to “if” and is often confused with it. But the two are completely different. The second part of an “if” sentence is dependant on the condition given by the “if” part of the sentence. <br />For example:<br />Man:	If you need to contact me, call me on this number.<br />Man:	If you don’t insure your luggage, you won’t get any compensation.<br />Man:	If your passport is stolen, you should contact the police.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />Woman:	There’s only one more hour and the taxi will be here to take us to the airport. Let’s double check everything.<br />Man: 	Have you left the key with the neighbour in case the alarm goes off?<br />Woman:	Yes.<br />Man:	Have you written down all the bank and credit card help numbers, in case somebody steals my wallet?<br />Woman: 	Yes.<br />Man: 	What will we do if we can’t take all this hand luggage onboard?<br />Woman:	If we can’t take all this hand luggage onboard, we’ll just have to repack at the airport.<br />Man:	Have you packed jackets and an umbrella, in case it rains?<br />Woman: 	If it rains in Barbados, we can buy an umbrella there, I’m not taking up space in our suitcases with silly things.<br />Man:	OK, well I think that’s everything. Let’s just check our passports and travel documents are safe, and we can relax until the taxi comes.<br />Woman:	I hope he’s not late. What will we do if he’s late?<br />Man:	Sit down and relax, we have plenty of time, and if he is late, we’ll call the taxi company, and I can always drive if necessary.<br />Woman:	OK, put the kettle on then, and remember to unplug it after you’ve made the tea.<br />Man:	Yes, dear.</p>

<p>Leggi le frasi che seguono. Qual è la differenza tra loro?</p>
<p>a) 	Put essential replacements in your hand luggage, in case your suitcases don’t arrive at your destination<br />b) 	<strong>If</strong> your documents are lost or stolen, you should report the theft to the police immediately. </p>
<p> - 	Usiamo <strong>in case</strong> per parlare dell’eventualità di un evento o di una situazione.
<em>Put essential replacements in your hand luggage, <strong>in case</strong> your suitcases don’t arrive at your destination (OR it is possible that your suitcases don’t arrive)</em>
Metti un ricambio nel bagaglio, casomai le valigie non arrivassero a destinazione.</p>
<p> - 	Usiamo<strong> if</strong> per parlare di un presupposto o una condizione a cui segue un’azione.
<em><strong>If</strong> your documents are lost or stolen, you should report the theft to the police immediately.</em>
Se i tuoi documenti vengono rubati, devi denunciare il furto immediatamente alla polizia. (Solo se si verifica questa situazione).</p>
<p>Osserva però che <strong>in case of</strong> è usato come <strong>if</strong>:

<em>Woman:     Do you know the different meanings of the verb “portare”? Listen and learn.
    <br />Woman:     To “take” in this definition means to carry or move something or somebody. It is an irregular verb, and its past ending is “took.”<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:    I’m taking my wife to a nice restaurant.<br />Man:    Can you take this fish to table 5 please?<br />Man:    We’ll take a taxi to the restaurant.</p>
<p>Woman:    “To Bring” in this definition means to carry or take something or somebody to a place with you. It is an irregular verb, and its past ending is “brought”.<br />For example:<br />Man:    Can you bring me the bill please?<br />Woman:    Certainly.<br />Woman:    Listen to another example:<br />Woman:    Don’t forget to bring your wallet to the restaurant.<br />Man:    I won’t, I only did that once, we were lucky you had your credit card on you.</p>
<p>Woman:    “To Carry” in this definition means to hold something or somebody in your hands, arms, or on your back while you are moving from one place to another. It is a regular verb.<br />For example:<br />Man:    Can you help me carry these plates to table 10 please?<br />Woman:    Of course, it’s really busy in the restaurant tonight isn’t it?
 <br />Woman:    “To Wear” in this definition means to have clothes, jewellery etc. on your body. It is an irregular verb, and its past ending is “wore”.<br />For example:<br />Man:    What colour dress are you wearing to the restaurant tonight?<br />Woman:    Pink. Why?<br />Man:    I have to make sure that I’m wearing a matching tie.</p>
<p>Woman:    Now let’s listen to these verbs in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />Woman:    Hello, can I take your order please?<br />Man:    Yes, please. We’d like Nachos for two as a starter, then Tacos for the main course.<br />Woman:    Would you like any wine?<br />Man:    Yes, can you bring us a bottle of Merlot please with the main course?<br />Woman:     Can I bring you any drinks while you are waiting for the meal?<br />Man:     Mmm, 2 small Margheritas please.<br />Woman:    It’s nice here, but, I wish you weren’t wearing a white shirt.<br />Man:    Why?<br />Woman:    Because you always spill things on you, especially when you are eating Nachos.<br />Man:    I’ll try to be careful.<br />Woman:    I should have asked the waitress to bring you a bib.<br />Woman:    Can you take these drinks to table 23 please?<br />Man:    Sure, let me just get a tray to carry them on.<br />Woman:    Hurry up their Nachos is almost ready.<br />Man:    Here are your cocktails.<br />Woman:    Thank you.</p>

    <content type="html" xml:lang="it-it" xml:base="http://www.englishblog.it/post/511/ristorante-grammatica"><![CDATA[<p><span style="color:#72727;font-weight:bold;">Nella lezione di oggi ci soffermiamo sui verbi che in inglese traducono il verbo ‘portare’.</span></p>
<p><strong>Take</strong>: portare qualcosa lontano da chi parla o portare via qualcuno dal luogo in cui ci si trova verso un altro posto.<br />I’m taking the children to Pizza Hut tonight.<br />My husband took me to a fancy restaurant on our anniversary.<br />Take this steak to table No. 6, please.</p>
<p><strong>Bring</strong>: portare qualcosa verso chi parla.<br />Can you bring us the bill, please?<br />Helen’s brought me a real coffee maker from Italy!</p>
<p><strong>Carry</strong>: portare con sé fisicamente.<br />A cafeteria is a restaurant where you pay for your meal first and then carry it yourself to a table.</p>
<p><strong>Wear</strong>: portare addosso (abiti, accessori, ecc…).<br />Although she was having dinner at a fancy restaurant, she was wearing blue jeans.

Woman: 	How do you form the past simple? Well for regular verbs in the affirmative it is quite simple, you just add “ed” to the end of the verb<br />	Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I visited my grandmother last week.<br />Man:	I watched an old Christmas film last night.<br />Man:   I worked over 20 hours yesterday.<br />Woman: 	However, if a verb ends in “y”, we add “ied” at the end.<br />	Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I studied phrasal verbs yesterday morning.<br />Man:	I married my wife 10 years ago.<br />Woman:   	However there are a lot of irregular verbs, which if you want to speak English properly, you must learn:</p>
<p>e.g. go = went, do = did, eat = ate, drink = drank, drive = drove, <br />buy = bought etc.<br />	Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I drank too much spumante last Christmas Eve.<br />Man:	I ate too many mince pies last Christmas, and put on 10 kilos of weight in 1 week.<br />Man:	I did my Christmas shopping in November last year, to avoid the queues.<br />Woman: 	To ask questions In the simple past, the form is did + subject + verb, e.g. Did you go shopping last week?<br />	Listen to some more examples:<br />Man:	What  did you do last New Year’s Eve?<br />Man:	What did you do last Christmas?
	<br />Woman: 	To use the negative in the past simple, the form is subject+didn’t+verb. <br />E.g. I didn’t go to England last year, I celebrated Christmas in Italy instead.<br />	Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I didn’t study for my exams last December, I was too busy partying.<br />Man:	I didn’t get many presents last Christmas.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in a dialogue between two people sharing memories of their last Christmas.<br />Woman:  	I can’t believe the shops have Christmas decorations in the windows already – and it’s only October.<br />Man: 	Well, some people say it’s too early, but I love it myself, it starts the magic of Christmas time early.<br />Woman:	Don’t tell me you are doing your Christmas shopping already?<br />Man:	Actually, last year, I started shopping in November – I have a very big family.<br />Woman: 	Wow! I didn’t do mine until Christmas Eve?<br />Man: 	You mean the 24th of December? Was there anything left in the shops?<br />Woman:	Of course, I bought all my presents in one morning, and I even got some discounts too.<br />Man:	How did you manage to wrap all your presents on time?<br />Woman: 	At the shops, they “gift-wrap” for free.<br />Man: 	I didn’t know that. I spent hours last year, wrapping everything up. I’ll get the shops to do it this year.<br />Woman:  	And what did you receive for Christmas last year?<br />Man:  	Oh, all sorts of goodies. My children know how to spoil me. What about you?<br />Woman:  I got a new car – to replace the one I crashed. My husband even gift wrapped it, so it was a fantastic surprise, when he took me to the garage to collect it.</p>

We use the “Past Simple” to talk about past actions, when:

<p><strong>The Past Simple:</strong></p>
<p>We use<strong> the “Past Simple”</strong> to talk about <strong>past actions, when</strong>:
<ol></p>
<p><li>It is a past action and we <strong>say when it happened</strong>.<br />e.g.  I went to London 2 days ago.</li></p>
<p><li>It is a past action and it was done <strong>in finished time</strong>.<br />e.g. I visited my uncle last week. ( Last week OR a finished time period.)</li></p>
<p><li> It is <strong>a past fact</strong>.<br />e.g. Italy won the world cup in 2006.</li></p>
<p><li>It is <strong>a historical fact</strong>
e.g. Messina had a big earthquake in 1908.</li>
</ol></p>
<p>
<strong>How is the Past Simple formed?</strong></p>
<p><strong>FORM:</strong></p>
<p><ul>
<li><strong>Affirmative:</strong>
<strong>Regular verbs: subject + verb +ed</strong>
e.g. walk => walk<strong>ed</strong>, cook => cook<strong>ed</strong> etc.</p>
<p>If a verb <strong>ends in “y”</strong> then the past simple form is: subject+verb+<strong>ied</strong>
e.g. hurry => hurr<strong>ied</strong>, study => stud<strong>ied</strong></p>
<p>However <strong>there are a lot of irregular verbs</strong>, which if you want to speak English properly, you must learn:<br />e.g. go => <strong>went</strong>, do => <strong>did</strong>, eat => <strong>ate</strong>, etc.</li></p>
<p>
<li><strong>Negative:</strong>
<strong>All </strong>verbs:  <strong>subject + didn’t + verb</strong>
e.g. I <strong>didn’t go</strong> to work yesterday.</li></p>
<p><li><strong>Interrogative:</strong>
<strong>All </strong>verbs:  <strong>did+ subject + verb+ object?</strong>
e.g. <strong>Did you have</strong> a nice day?<br />       <strong>Where did you go</strong> last night?<br />       <strong>What did you do</strong> yesterday?</li>

 </p> <p>
<em>Woman:	Countable nouns are things we can count, such as 1 apple, 2 apples, 3 apples etc. They are singular nouns. You can use "a" and "an" with singular countable nouns, for example "a tomato", "an egg", but you cannot use countable nouns alone (without a/the/my etc.)<br />Now listen to these examples:</p>
<p>Man:	I want a peach.<br />Man:	I need 3 tomatoes for this recipe.<br />Man:	Can you pass me an egg please?</p>
<p>Woman:	Uncountable nouns are things we cannot count, such as rice, flour, fruit etc.<br />They are plural nouns. You cannot use "a" and "an" with plural uncountable nouns, for example, we do not say “a rice” or “a fruit”, but you can use “some” in front of them, for example some water. And you can often use “a…of” such as “a bowl of rice,” “a slice of cake”. <br />For example:</p>
<p>Man:	I’d like a plate of spaghetti please.<br />Man:	Can you pass me some pasta?<br />Man:	I need some flour.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />Man: 	What are you doing?<br />Woman:	I’m going to make an apple pie. First I need to make some pastry, can you pass me some flour please?<br />Man:	Sure, here it is. Do you need anything else?<br />Woman:	Just some butter please.<br />Man: 	I’ll help you. How much butter do you need?<br />Woman:	Just 3 spoonfuls please, and put it in the bowl slowly so I can blend it in with the flour.<br />Man:	Shall I peel and chop the apples?<br />Woman:	Yes please, 4 apples should be enough.<br />Man:	OK, the apples are ready, what shall I do with them now?<br />Woman:	Pass them to me please, and I’ll boil them with a little sugar, they only take 5 minutes. You can watch them and keep on stirring them while I add some water the flour and butter to make the pastry.<br />Man:	Mmm, what a nice smell, I love apple pie.<br />Woman:	Well you’re only allowed 1 slice of it, you’re on a diet remember.<br />Man:	If you say so.</p>

<strong>A knob of </strong>margarine<br /></p>
<p>Quando la quantità non è definita, usiamo il partitivo SOME, sia per i sostantivi numerabili al plurale che per quelli non numerabili:<br />
I need to buy <strong>some eggs</strong> and <strong>some milk</strong> to make pancakes.<br /></p>
<p>Una curiosità:<br />

In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to prepare for a Halloween party. <br />Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:<br />PART ONE: you’ll be learning the different uses of the word “would.”<br />PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to throw a Halloween party!<br />So let’s start!<br /> </p> <p>

Woman: 	The word “would” can be confusing. It has Many different uses. Listen and learn some of them:	<br />Woman: 	We use “would” to make polite requests. “Would you like a coffee?” means “do you want a coffee?” But, by using “would you like…?” it sounds much politer. Now listen to this example:</p>
<p>Man:	Do you want to do something different next week?<br />Woman:	Such as?<br />Man:    Well, I was thinking of having a Halloween party, would you like to come?<br />Woman:  Oh, yes please!<br />Woman:	“Would” is also used for hypothetical imaginary situations in the present and the future. This is known grammatically as the 2nd conditional, and is usually in a sentence structured with “if” + past simple, then would + verb. Listen to these examples: </p>
<p>Man:	If I had more money, I would hire a disco for the party, but, I think I’ll have to have it at home.<br />Man:	If I were a wizard like Harry Potter, I would put a million pounds in my bank account.</p>
<p>Woman: 	“Would” is also the past of “will”, it is often used in this way in reported speech, that is, when we repeat what somebody has said.  Now listen to this example:</p>
<p>Man:	Yippee! Sue says she will help me with the decorations for the party.<br />Woman:	Sorry, I wasn’t listening, what did you say?<br />Man:	I said that Sue said that she would help me with the decorations for the party.<br />Woman:	Another use of “would” is to talk about things that happened repeatedly in the past, but don’t happen now. It is similar to “used to + infinitive”, but a little more formal, and when we use “would + infinitive” we mention a specific time in the past. Listen to these examples: </p>
<p>Man:	When I was a child, I loved Halloween, I would play “trick or treat” for hours with my friends.<br />Man:	In the old days, everybody would wear masks on the 31st of October to confuse the ghosts.</p>
<p>
Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />	Halloween has always been a big celebration and an excuse for a party in America &amp; the British Isles, but, in recent years it has gained popularity in other countries too. So imagine you want to throw a Halloween party, where would you start? <br />Woman:   What would you like to do next week?<br />Man: 	Well I’d like to have some fun, it’s Halloween!<br />Woman:	Oh, I forgot. What shall we do?<br />Man:	Well, I’d like to throw a party.<br />Woman:     Really? What ideas have you got?<br />Man: 	Well....,if I had the money, I would like to hire a disco, but, it’s expensive, so I guess, I’ll have to have it at home. I would like to have everybody in fancy dress though, and organise lots of games.<br />Woman:	Sounds good. Would you like me to help you organise it?<br />Man:	Yes please. Let’s make a list of everything we need to do, there isn’t much time.<br />Woman: 	OK, well, we need to decide who to invite, and tell them its fancy dress, so they can organise their costumes. We need to get some decorations and decide on Halloween games, then there’s just the food, drink and music to take care of. <br />Man:   You make everything sound so easy.<br />Woman:  I get that from my grand mother. When I was young, I used to help her organise family parties, she would have me write down everything she wanted to do as she spoke, so she wouldn’t forget anything. We used to have a lot of fun.<br />Man: 	Fantastic! So let’s start. Who shall we invite?<br />Woman:   Give me the list and I’ll start calling.<br />Man: 	Ok, here you go. Start with Rosaria, she’s a great girl to get a party started.<br />Woman:	Heh, I spoke to Rosaria, she says she’ll be there, and call the rest of the gang if you want, so we can organise the other stuff.<br />Man:   	Sorry, what did you say? I couldn’t hear you, I’ve got the stereo on.<br />Woman: 	I said that I’d called Rosaria and she said that she would definitely come to the party and also she would call everybody else for us.<br />Man: 	Great! This party is really going to rock!</p>

<p>Parlare di fatti che al momento di parlare non erano ancora accaduti (<span style="font-weight:bold;">futuro nel passato</span>):
<em>They thought that the ghosts <span style="font-weight:bold;">would </span>mistake them for fellow spirits.</em>
(Credevano che i fantasmi li avrebbero scambiati per spiriti.)</p>

Nel discorso indiretto, per riferire intenzioni future espresse al passato:

<em>Woman: 	Do you know how to say how frequently you do something? Listen and learn:	<br />Woman: 	Adverbs of Frequency are used to say how often we do something. “Always” means 100% and at the other extreme is “never”, which means 0%.<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I always get up at 7am.<br />Man:	I always have lunch at 1.30pm.<br />Man:	I never use the tram.</p>
<p>Woman:	To say something is less frequent than “always” we use “normally” or “usually” followed by “often”.<br /> For example:<br />Man:	I usually work in my garden at the weekend.<br />Woman:	I often go to the cinema.</p>
<p>Woman:	To say something is less frequent than “often”, we use “sometimes” followed by “not often”.<br /> For example:<br />Woman:	I sometimes walk to work.<br />Man:	I don’t often use the tram.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />Woman:   How often do you go to the cinema?<br />Man: 	I usually go once a week. How about you?<br />Woman:	I sometimes go once a week, but I always go at least twice a month.<br />Man:	I sometimes go twice a week, if I’ve got the time.<br />Woman: 	What kind of films do you like?<br />Man: 	I love horror films.<br />Woman:	Urgh, I never watch horror films. I wouldn’t be able to sleep afterwards.<br />Man:	Well I also like science fiction films too.<br />Woman: 	I don’t often watch them either.<br />Man:	What kind of films do you watch at the cinema then?<br />Woman:	Well, I always check to see what the new releases are, and I usually choose a comedy if there is one.<br />Man:   Yes, I like those too, in fact I like most kinds of films, that’s why I go to the cinema so often. <br />Woman:	Well check the newspaper, to see what’s on, and we can go tonight if you like.<br />Man:	That’s a good idea.

In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on the differences between the verbs “meet” and “know.”<br />Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:<br />PART ONE: you’ll be learning how to use the verbs “meet” and “know”.<br />PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to use these verbs.<br />So let’s start!</em>
 </p> <p>
<em>Woman: 	Do you know the differences between “meet” and “know”? Listen and learn.	<br />Woman: 	We use the verb “meet” to say that we know someone for the first time. The past tense of meet is met. We also use the expression “Nice to meet you!” when we are introduced and meet somebody for the first time.<br /> Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I met my wife in America.<br />Man:	I met your sister last week.<br />Man+woman: 	Nice to meet you! </p>
<p>
Woman:	We also use the verb “meet” to make an appointment or a date.<br /> For example:<br />Man:	Let’s meet at 8pm outside the cinema.<br />Woman:	OK, I’ll meet you there then.</p>
<p>Woman: The verb “know” means to be familiar with a person – i.e. to have met somebody before.<br />For example:<br />Woman:	Do you know John?<br />Man:	Yes, I met him at your last birthday party.</p>
<p>Woman: “Know” also means to have knowledge of something in your mind.<br />For example:<br />Woman:	Do you know how to speak French?<br />Man:	Yes, I know how to speak French, I studied it for 5 years.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />Woman: 	Hello, I’m Susan from RLT Plastics, haven’t we met before?<br />Man: 	I don’t think so, I’m John from the GBS Corporation, nice to meet you.<br />Woman:	Do excuse me, I thought we’d met at the last conference. Nice to meet you.<br />Man:	Do you know many people here?<br />Woman: 	I don’t think so, there are always so many new faces at each conference. How about you?<br />Man: 	Only my work colleagues, this is our first presentation.<br />Woman:	Really? Oh look there’s my boss over there, let’s go over and meet him. <p>Il verbo ‘conoscere’ si traduce in inglese con due parole diverse a seconda del concetto che si intende esprimere. </p>
<p><strong>Meet </strong>significa ‘conoscere qualcuno per la prima volta’:</p>
<p><em>I met my boyfriend at a party two years ago.</em></p>
<p><em>Have you two met? </em>
(Vi hanno presentati?)</p>
<p><em>Nice to meet you!</em></p>
<p><strong>Meet </strong>significa anche ‘darsi appuntamento’, ‘incontrarsi’ e ‘andare a prendere qualcuno’:</p>
<p><em>‘What time shall we meet?’</em></p>
<p><em>‘Let’s meet at 8pm in front of the cinema.’</em></p>
<p><em>I’ll meet you at the station.</em></p>
<p><em>I met Brenda at the supermarket this morning. </em>

<p><strong>Know </strong>significa conoscere già qualcuno.</p>
<p><em>I have known Eric for 10 years </em>

 </p> <p>
<em>Woman: 	Phrasal verbs are 2 or 3 word verbs. The meaning of a verb changes when we add a preposition or an adverb to it. This can sometimes be a literal and obvious meaning, but, sometimes it is idiomatic. It is important to try and remember at least a few of them.	</p>
<p>Woman: 	Get on is a phrasal verb that means to enter a bus, train or tram.<br /> Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	To go to the centre you need to get on the number 5 bus.<br />Man:	You need to get on the Piccadilly line.<br />Man:	Get on the tram at the museum, and it will take you directly to the hospital.</p>
<p>Woman:	Get off is a phrasal verb that means to depart a bus, train or tram.<br />For example:<br />Man:	I think we’ve missed our stop I’m sure we should have got off at Convent Garden.<br />Woman:	Don’t worry, let’s get off at the next stop and walk back.<br />Woman:	Listen to another example:<br />Woman:	Excuse me, can you tell me when to get off this bus for the British Museum?<br />Man:	Certainly.</p>
<p>Woman: 	Get around is a phrasal verb that means to move or travel around from place to place.<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	You can get around Rome on foot, especially if it’s nice weather.<br />Man:	The best way to get around London is the Tube.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.<br />Woman: 	Where would you like to go today?<br />Man:	I’d like to go to the British museum.<br />Woman:	But, we went there yesterday.<br />Man:	Yes, but it’s so big, we only got around half of it.<br />Woman: 	Can’t we go back another day?<br />Man: 	Why? What would you like to do today?<br />Woman:	I’d like to see all the sights, Big Ben, The Tower of London etc.<br />Man:	In one day?<br />Woman: 	Well if we take an open top bus, we can get around most of them.<br />Man: 	That’s a good idea, and we can get on and off the bus whenever we want.<br />Woman:	Ok let’s get going then, we can get on the tube down the road, and get off at Oxford Street, where we can get on a bus.<br />Man:	Can we go back to the museum tomorrow?<br />Woman:	Of course.</p>

If not, listen and learn.	<br />Woman: 	“The most” is used to form the superlative for multi-syllable adjectives, such as beautiful, interesting and expensive.<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	In my opinion Rome is the most beautiful city in the world.<br />Man:	Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world.<br />Man:	In my opinion rugby is the most dangerous sport.</p>
<p>Woman:	“Most” is also used before multi-syllable adverbs.<br />	For example: <br />Man:	Do women play rugby in your country?<br />Woman:	There are a few teams, but it is most commonly played by men.</p>
<p>Woman:	Most is also used in front of nouns, to mean the biggest part. When most is followed by a noun which has “the, this, my etc.” before it, we must use “most of.” <br />	For example: <br />Man:	Most of the fans got wet in the rain.<br />Woman:	In the game of rugby, the props take most of the impact in the scrum.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.
	<br />Woman:	Did you know that New Zealand’s All Black team is the most popular team in the world?<br />Man: 	Where did you hear that? Australia is more well-known than them, in fact I know they have the most fans.<br />Woman:	I read it on the internet on their website.<br />Man: 	You can’t believe everything you read on the internet, most of it is rubbish.<br />Woman:	That’s not true. The internet is one of the most successful inventions ever.<br />Man:	OK, I agree with you, it is very good for researching some things, but some websites do not have reliable information.<br />Woman: 	Well the “All Blacks” is an official website, so I’m sure they wouldn’t write anything that isn’t true.<br />Man:	I guess so. It’s probably because of that strange dance they do before the start of a game.<br />Woman:	(Laugh) You mean the Haka, and it’s not strange, it comes from their heritage, and it’s the most popular and most watched start to a game all over the world.<br />Man:	That’s true, I’ve even seen it on some adverts.  <br />Woman:	Probably for beer no doubt.

<li>Per la formazione del <strong>superlativo degli aggettivi</strong>:<br />(The <strong>MOST </strong>+ parola lunga)</p>
<p>The fly-half is probably <strong>the most influential</strong> player on the pitch.<br />That was one of <strong>the most exciting</strong> games of rugby I’ve ever seen!</p>
<p>Nota bene: con le parole corte, il superlativo si forma aggiungendo <strong>-est/-st</strong>:</p>
<p>To be a full-back you need <strong>the safest</strong> pair of hands in the rugby team.<br />The hooker is often <strong>the smallest</strong> member of the forwards.<br />The wing is <strong>the fastest</strong> player in a rugby team.
</li>
<li>Con i <strong>sostantivi</strong>, per esprimere diversi concetti:
<ul style="list-style-type: lower-alpha;">
	<li>“la maggior parte di”.<br />	In questo caso, “the” va omesso, e si usa <strong>OF </strong>prima di pronomi e articoli:<br />	Props take <strong>most of the impact</strong> in the scrum.</li>
	<li>“più di ogni altro”:<br />	the hooker is the player with <strong>the most responsibility</strong>.</li>
	<li>“la grande maggioranza di”:<br />	<strong>Most props</strong> are quite short.<br />	<strong>Most haka</strong> seen today are haka without weapons.</li>
	</ul>

<li>Con gli <strong>avverbi</strong>

<em>Woman: 	Do you know how to use the future simple? Listen and learn.	<br />Woman: 	The future simple, is formed with the auxiliary verb “will” + bare infinitive in the affirmative form. (N.B. it’s contracted form is I’ll etc.) We use “won’t” + bare infinitive in the negative form. And to ask questions we use “Will” + subject + the bare infinitive.<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	I will go to the cinema next weekend.<br />Man:	I won’t watch a horror film.</p>
<p>Man:	Will you come with me?<br />Woman:	We use “Will” + verb to talk about our future intentions, usually when we have no plan or it’s a spontaneous decision.<br />For example:<br />Man:	Brrh! The weather has changed, it’s cold in here.<br />Woman:	I’ll close the window.</p>
<p>Woman: We also use “will” to talk about future predictions, when sentences start with “I think”, “I’m sure”, “I hope” etc.<br />For example:<br />Woman:	Do you think you’ll pass the exam?<br />Man:	I hope I will pass.</p>
<p>
Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.</p>
<p>Woman: 	What’s the weather forecast for tomorrow?<br />Man: 	It says it will rain again.<br />Woman:	Oh no! Will it rain at the weekend?<br />Man:	I’m not sure just one moment. No, it says it will be sunny on Saturday.<br />Woman: 	I hope it’ll be sunny, I’m sick of this cold weather.<br />Man: 	Well, if it’s sunny we’ll go to the beach.<br />Woman:	You’re joking! If it’s sunny we’ll work in the garden.<br />Man:	Why?<br />Woman: 	Because it’s a mess.<br />Man:	Urgh! Now I hope it will rain again.<br />Woman:	Ok, we won’t work in the garden, but we’ll just have to see how the weather is before we make any plans.<br />Man:	OK

<p>In inglese l’ausiliare <strong>WILL </strong>è utilizzato per esprimere diversi concetti

	<li>Do not reply to spam emails: this <strong>will confirm</strong> that your email address is live.</li>
	<li>I think <strong>we’ll close</strong> our online bank account. It’s not safe.</li>
	<li> - Oh, no! I have been phished! What <strong>shall I</strong> do? <br /> - Don’t worry, <strong>I’ll call</strong> the bank immediately.</li>
	<li><strong>Will you</strong> please <strong>stop </strong>sending me stupid emails?</li>
	<li>Your bank <strong>won’t ask</strong> you to provide your password, so beware of phishers!</li>
</ul></p>
<p>
Usiamo <strong>WILL </strong>+ forma base del verbo quando:</p>
<p><ul style="list-style-type: decimal">
	<li>parliamo di situazioni che prevediamo si verificheranno in futuro;</li>
	<li>prendiamo delle decisioni sul momento;</li>
	<li>chiediamo suggerimenti sul da farsi (in questo caso va usato <strong>Shall </strong>con <strong>I</strong> e <strong>we</strong>) o ci offriamo di fare qualcosa per qualcuno;</li>
	<li>chiediamo a qualcuno di fare qualcosa. Nell’esempio, will viene usato per dare un ordine, ma questa struttura può essere impiegata per fare una semplice richiesta (<strong>Will you open the window, please?</strong>). La sfumatura di significato è comunicata dalla diversa intonazione con cui si pone la domanda;</li>
<li>la forma negativa di <strong>will </strong>è <strong>won’t</strong> (forma contratta di <strong>will not</strong>).</li>
</ul></p>

 </p> <p>
<em>Woman: 	The Saxon Genitive is used to show possession and replaces “of”. Instead of saying the bag of Mary, we say Mary’s bag. The form for singular regular nouns is to add an apostrophe + “s” at the end of the word.Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	George’s car, not the car of George.<br />Man:	Andrew’s house, not the house of Andrew.<br />Man:	The company’s new manager, not the manager of the new company.</p>
<p>Woman: 	 If it is a plural noun ending in “s”, we just add an apostrophe at the end of the word.<br />For example:<br />Man:	The girls’ bedroom, not the bedroom of the girls.<br />Woman:	The books’ covers, not the covers of the books.<br />Man:	The dogs’ food, not the food of the dogs.</p>
<p>Woman:	However if a plural noun does not end in “s”, such as women and people, we add apostrophe + “s” to indicate possession.<br />Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	The people’s republic.<br />Woman:	Women’s clothes.<br />Man:	A children’s book</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen carefully to how this couple use the Genitive.<br />Woman:	Remember we are going to the Smith’s next Saturday.<br />Man:	Who?<br />Woman:	The Smith’s, you know Mr and Mrs Smith, Tom and Sue. <br />Man:	Aah I remember now, but, it’s 3 days away.<br />Woman:	Yes, but it’s Sue’s birthday, so we need to buy her a present.<br />Man:	What are you going to buy?<br />Woman:	Excuse me, have you heard of women’s liberation? Why should I buy everything? I think it’s your turn.<br />Man:	But, I bought Tom’s present last time.<br />Woman:	I know, and he loved it, that’s why you are doing it again.<br />Man:	Mmm, have you heard of men’s liberation and equality?<br />Woman:	No, it doesn’t exist.<br />Man:	Well I’ll go shopping again,  just this once, but, remember next time it’s your turn.<br />Woman:	OK.</p>

<p>In inglese è possibile rendere il complemento di specificazione con una particolare struttura detta <strong>genitivo sassone</strong> o “possessivo con ‘s”:</p>
<p><strong>Mary’s bag</strong>
La borsa di Mary</p>
<p><strong>London’s monuments</strong>
I monumenti di Londra </p>
<p><strong>Yesterday’s newspapers</strong>
I giornali di ieri </p>
<p><strong>St Paul’s Cathedral</strong>
La cattedrale di San Paolo </p>
<p><strong>The chemist’s</strong>
La farmacia (il negozio del farmacista) </p>
<p><strong>The cat’s tail</strong>
La coda del gatto </p>
<p><strong>The company’s logo</strong>
Il logo della compagnia </p>
<p>Il <strong>genitivo sassone</strong> indica l’appartenenza a persone o gruppi di persone, paesi e città, elementi temporali. Non si usa con le cose.</p>
<p>Il <strong>genitivo sassone</strong> si forma nel modo seguente:</p>
<p><img src="http://static.blogo.it/englishblog/farmaciagrammatica.jpg" align="left" border="0" width="150" height="184" alt="CLAM" /> <ul style="list-style: inside;">
<li>il possessore (<strong>London</strong>) passa al primo posto </li>
<li>la ‘s sostituisce <strong>of</strong> </li>
<li>la cosa posseduta segue la ‘s. </li>
</ul></p>
<p></p>
<p>Per i <strong>sostantivi plurali</strong>, si aggiunge solo <strong>l’apostrofo</strong> (es, the girls’ books). Fanno <strong>eccezione</strong> i <strong>plurali irregolari</strong> (es, the women’s voices).</p>
<p>Questa forma di possessivo si usa anche per gli esercizi commerciali, anche se oggi molti parlanti tendono a ometterlo.</p>
<p><strong>I met Mary at the hairdresser(’s) yesterday</strong> <br />OR Ieri ho incontrato Mary dal parrucchiere.</p>

<em>Woman: 	If we don’t say who we are talking to, we use “say” for direct speech, and the past of say “said” for indirect speech.<br />	Now listen to these examples:</p>
<p>Man:	“Did she say what happened?”</p>
<p>Man:	She said that it was a good party.</p>
<p>Man:	Tom says “he’s in love again.”<br />Woman: 	 But if we say who we are talking to, we use “tell”+ personal object (i.e. me, him, us etc.) for direct speech and “told” + personal object for indirect speech.</p>
<p>	For example:</p>
<p>Man:	Jim tells me that he’s living in London now.</p>
<p>Woman:	The doctor told me to stay in bed.</p>
<p>Man:	I told him that it was impossible.</p>
<p>Woman:	However, you can use “say” or “said” with a personal object if you add “to”. i.e. “you say something to somebody”</p>
<p>Now listen to this example:</p>
<p>Woman:	What did you say to your boss?<br />Man:	I said to him, that I was tired with all the extra hours I work.<br />Woman:	What did he say to you?<br />Man:	He said to me, that he would try and work out a better system.</p>

<p><strong>Mary:</strong> <em>“Two days ago I received a love letter from a secret admirer”</em>
<strong>Jane:</strong> <em>“Did you? How romantic!”</em></p>
<p><strong>Jane: </strong><em>“Mary <strong>said that </strong>she has received a love letter from a secret admirer”</em>
<strong>Paul: </strong><em>“I know. I sent it! I’m in love with her!”</em></p>
<p><strong>Jane:</strong> <em>"Paul is your secret admirer!"</em>
<strong>Mary: </strong><em>"Who <strong>told you </strong>that?"</em>
<strong>Jane: </strong><em>"It was him! He <strong>said</strong>: 'I sent the letter! I’m in love with her!'"</em>.</p>

<li>SAY si usa nel discorso indiretto o diretto, per riferire le parole altrui: </p>
<p>Mary said that she has received a love letter from a secret admirer.<br />Paul said: <em>“I sent it! I’m in love with her!”</em>.</p>
<p>Nel discorso indiretto, la congiunzione that può essere omessa: Mary said she has received a love letter.</p>
<p>SAY va seguito da:<ul>

<p><li>Dalle parole riferite tra virgolette (He said: <em>“I sent it! I’m in love with her!”</em>)</li></p>

And then you’ll be listening to an English tourist asking an Italian policeman for directions.<br />Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:<br />PART ONE: you’ll be learning some of the uses of the verb “get.”<br />PART TWO: you’ll be listening to these words in the context of an English tourist asking for directions from the police.<br />“Do you get it???” This is informal English for “Do you understand…so far?” <br />Let’s start!</em>

Woman: 	Get is a verb, and although it has hundreds of uses when we add a preposition or adverb and it becomes a phrasal verb, as an ordinary verb it means to receive, obtain or buy something. N.B. the past of “get” is “got”. Now listen to these examples:<br />Man:	Did you remember to get some sugar at the shops?<br />Man:	I got a beautiful new car yesterday; my wife bought it for me.<br />Man:	I’m going shopping to get some toys for my kids.</p>
<p>Woman: 	 “Get on” and “Get off".<br />These are phrasal verbs, which means that a preposition has been added, so the meaning changes. (N.B. there are often many other meanings,) <br />“Get on” means to enter a bus, tram, train etc. <br />“Get off” means to depart a bus, tram, train etc.<br />For example:<br />Man:	Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to Oxford Street please?<br />Woman:	Yes, you need to get on the tube, and get off at Oxford Circus. There is a map in all the underground stations.<br />Man:	Thank you very much. </p>
<p>Woman:   	“Get in” and “Get out of”. <br />	These are also phrasal verbs.<br />	“Get in” means to enter a car or a building. <br />	“Get out of” means to depart a car or building.<br />Now listen to this example:<br />Woman:	Get out of my car!<br />Man:	Why? What have I done?<br />Woman: 	Your singing is driving me crazy, please get out, you’re nearly at your office, and you can walk from here.<br />Man: 	Okay, no problem. Have a nice day, and try and relax a little.</p>

Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in a dialogue between an English tourist and an Italian policeman.<br />Woman:	Hello, Do you speak English?<br />Man: 	A little bit, how can I help you?<br />Woman:	Well, I’m lost. I want to go to Piazza Cairoli. Am I in the right direction?<br />Man:	Well, you are in the wrong direction for the Piazza, good job, you stopped to ask a policeman. Are you travelling by car or on foot?<br />Woman: 	I’m on foot at the moment; I got out of my car, and parked it over there, as there was too much traffic.<br />Man: 	OK, well it’s probably best that you leave your car there, and get in it, when you’ve finished your tour of Messina.<br />Woman:	So how do I get to Piazza Cairoli then, I want to go shopping.<br />Man:	Well it’s too far on foot, you need to get on the tram, there’s a stop over there, and after about 3 stops, you get off the tram at Piazza Cairoli, right in the centre.<br />Woman: 	Thank you very much. Do I need a ticket for the tram?<br />Man: 	Yes, you can buy one at the tobacconist just over there, and it’s valid for 3 hours.<br />Woman: 	Thank you for your help. Have a nice day!<br />Man: 	No problem, if you get lost again, just ask a policeman or woman, and they’ll be happy to help you too. Enjoy Messina!<br />Woman:  Thanks, I will!</p>

<p>Nell’inglese informale, <strong>get </strong>può sostituire ‘be’ nella forma passiva

</em>“La Tempesta Perfetta” è un film su un gruppo di pescatori che vengono sorpresi da una tremenda tempesta.</p>
<p>Se <strong>seguito da preposizione</strong>, <strong>get </strong>assume vari significati:
<strong>get up</strong> (alzarsi); <strong>get on with</strong> (andare d’accordo con), <strong>get back</strong> (ritornare)…</p>

 </p> <p>
<em>Woman: 	I have got 1 brother and 1 sister. Or, I have 1 brother and 1 sister. <br />	What is the difference? They both indicate possession, and the first is British English, and the second is used in American English.<br />	Now listen to these examples:</p>
<p>Man:	I have got a beautiful garden.<br />Man:	Have you got brothers or sisters?<br />Man:	I haven’t got brothers or sisters. I’m an only child.</p>
<p>Woman: 	I have lunch at 1.30pm.<br />	In this example, have is an ordinary verb, meaning “to take” a meal, drink, shower, lesson etc. It is never followed by got, and obeys the rules of an ordinary verb.<br />	For example:<br />Man:	What time do you have lunch?<br />Woman:	I have lunch at 1.30 p.m.<br />Man: 	I have an English lesson today.</p>
<p>Woman:	I’m having a party.<br />	This is another example of “have” as an ordinary verb. It means to “give” a party or to entertain guests. It also follows the rules of an ordinary verb, and is never followed by got.<br />	Now listen to this example:<br />Woman:	I’m having a party next Friday. Would you like to come?<br />Man:	Are you having a fancy dress party again?<br />Woman:  No, I’m having a birthday party.<br />Man:      Oh I forgot, Congratulations! Of course I’ll be there.</p>
<p>Woman:	I’m a police woman I have to wear a uniform for work.<br />	If we add “to” to the verb “have,” the meaning changes completely, it is similar to “must” and  indicates obligation. <br />	Now listen to these  examples :<br />Woman:	Do you have to go to work tonight?<br />Man:	Yes, I have to. You know I have to work shifts as a policeman.<br />Woman:	I hate that uniform, do you have to wear it.<br />Man:	Well I can get changed at work if you like, but I have to wear this uniform for my job.</p>
<p>Woman:	Now let’s listen to these words in the following dialogue:<br />Woman: 	Hi, sorry I’m late, I had to finish a report, before I could leave the office.<br />Man: 	Don’t worry, I have ordered lunch for us, because I only have an hour’s lunch break.<br />Woman:	Thank you. What are we having?<br />Man:	We’re having “Today’s Special” – mixed seafood.<br />Woman: 	Sounds good. <br />Man: 	Did you have a good time at the party last night?<br />Woman:	Well you know Sally, she always has good parties...I think that’s why I was behind with my work. I ate and drank too much.<br />Man:	Do you have to do anything after lunch?<br />Woman: 	Yes, I have to find an anniversary present for my sister-in-law.<br />Man:	You are always shopping.<br />Woman:	I know. I’ve got such a big family, so it’s necessary.<br />Man:	How long do you have for your lunch break today?<br />Woman:	Three hours, so I’m having an English lesson also.</p>

<p>Leggi le frasi seguenti e prova a capire quale tipo di concetto esprime il verbo HAVE in ciascuna di esse:</p>

	<li> I <strong>have got</strong> two brothers and a sister. </li>
	<li> (at the pub) “I’ll <strong>have </strong>a diet Coke. What are you <strong>having</strong>?” </li>
	<li> My sister is a flight attendant. She <strong>has to</strong> wear a uniform. </li>
	<li> On Tuesday <strong>I’m having a party</strong> for my birthday. </li>
	<li> Can I <strong>have a look</strong> at your newspaper, please? </li>
	<li> I’m very tired. I’ll <strong>have a shower</strong> and go to bed. </li>
	<li> I usually <strong>have dinner </strong>at 8 o’clock. </li>

a) qui il verbo have indica <strong>possesso</strong>, ed è accompagnato dal rafforzativo <strong>got</strong>. La forma <strong>have got</strong> è tipica dell’inglese britannico.</p>
<p>b) in questo caso have corrisponde all’italiano <strong>“prendere” </strong>riferito a cibi e bevande. Qui è preceduto da will (Io prendo una Coca) e usato nella forma -ING (Tu cosa prendi?).</p>
<p>c) il verbo <strong>have</strong>, accompagnato da <strong>TO</strong>, assume il significato di <strong>dovere </strong>(obbligo imposto dall’esterno, necessità).</p>
<p>d) /e) il verbo <strong>have </strong>è usato in <strong>espressioni idiomatiche </strong>come “dare una festa” o “dare un’occhiata".</p>
<p>f) qui il verbo <strong>have </strong>significa <strong>“fare” </strong>(es. fare una doccia).</p>
<p>g) il verbo <strong>have </strong>è accompagnato dal <strong>nome di un pasto</strong>, come in <strong>have lunch</strong>, <strong>have breakfast</strong> (pranzare, fare colazione).<br /> </p> ]]></content>

<em>Woman:    Do you know when to say “Does your sister go to university?”, and “Excuse me, how do I get to the university?” What is the difference? Listen:<br />Woman:    In the first example, Does your sister go to university?, the  word university is <br />considered as an institution and [the] can be left out. <br />In the second sentence, Excuse me, how do I get to the university?, the word university is considered as a specific place, so we have to use the definite article.</p>
<p>Listen to other examples:</p>
<p>Man:   Alison had an accident yesterday. She’s in hospital now  <br />Woman: I went to the hospital this morning to visit her.	<br />Man:   Potonski is in prison<br />Woman: My company is repairing the prison</p>
<p>Woman: 	Remember that if before the word College or University or other names of buildings  there is a proper or geographical name the article is left out.  However, if after the name there is an expression which determines it, the article [the] is required<br />	Listen to this example:<br />Man: She has applied to study French at London University. 	<br />Woman: They are going to visit Coventry Cathedral	<br />Man:  Where is Charing Cross station?<br />Woman: It’s off  Trafalgar  Square, between the Post Office and Coutts Bank .<br />Man:	They are going to visit the Wall of China<br />Woman:	They are going to visit the Wall of China</p>
<p>Woman:  Note that the names of most hotels and pubs, many theatres and cinemas and most <br />museums and art galleries need to be used with the definite article. <br />Man: Shall we eat at the  Duck. It’s a nice place<br />Woman: The National Gallery is on the northern side of Trafalgar Square. It’s about half an hour walk from The British Museum.</p>
<p>Woman :  Now let’s listen to a dialogue between two students deciding where to eat on campus:<br /> Woman: Shall we eat at  Pino’s?<br />Man:  No,  I’m a vegetarian. Let’s have dinner at the Irish Pub.<br />Woman: Don’t be ridiculous! You can also have something to eat over there!<br />Man: Bad idea! It’s impossible because they don’t serve salad…<br />Woman: I don’t like the Irish Pub. Can you suggest another place?<br />Man: Uhm…. Let me think…Well… shall we eat at the Slug and Lettuce?<br />Woman: Good choice! I like the place and I never have chance to go there…. Let’s go!</p>

<p>Leggi le frasi seguenti. Qual è la differenza tra loro?
<ol>
   	<li> “<em>Does your sister go <strong>to university</strong>? </em>”<br /> “<em>Yes, she studies Biology</em>”.</li>
	<li> “Excuse me, how do I get <strong>to the university</strong>?”<br /> “You can get a number 45 bus from here”.</li>
</ol>
Nel primo esempio, ci riferiamo all’università come istituzione, dunque l’articolo the si omette.</p>
<p>Nel secondo esempio, ci riferiamo all’università in quanto luogo fisico specifico, dunque utilizziamo l’articolo determinativo.</p>
<p>La stessa regola si applica a college, prison, hospital e church.</p>
<p>Alison had an accident yesterday. She’s <strong>in hospital </strong>now.</p>
<p>I went to <strong>the hospital </strong>this morning to visit her.</p>
<p>Ricorda che se la parola <strong>College </strong>o <strong>University </strong>è preceduta da un nome proprio o geografico, l’articolo si omette:</p>
<p>She has applied to study French at London University (The University of London).
