Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to make a hotel reservation.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English phrases you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to make a hotel reservation.
So let’s start!

Woman:	Imagine you are going to a foreign country and you need to reserve a hotel. What do you need to know before you make that call? Here are some useful phrases you need to remember:
Woman:	Your arrival and departure date
Man:	This is when you will arrive and leave the hotel. For example:
Man:	Your arrival date is Friday the 25th of June and your departure date is Monday the 28th.
Woman:	That’s correct.
Woman:	What kind of room do you want?
Man:	How many people will stay in the room? Do you want a single, a double or a twin?
Woman:	I’d like to book a room for 2 people please.
Man:	Would you like a twin or a double?
Woman:	How much does it cost?
Man:	This is what you ask, when you want to know the price of something.
Woman:	Excuse me, how much does it cost for a room with a view?
Man:	A room with a balcony costs an extra £35.

Woman: Now let’s listen to these useful words in the dialogue: pay attention to what you’ll be asked, and what you need to answer.
Man: Good afternoon this is the George hotel, Harry speaking, how can I help you?
Woman: Hello, I’d like to book a room please.
Man: Ok, when for?
Woman: From the 21st of June until the 26th of June.
Man: So you’ll be arriving on the 21st of June, staying 5 nights and checking out on the 26th of June.
Woman: Yes, that’s right.
Man: Would you like a single or a double room?
Woman: Actually, I’d like a twin if possible, as I’m travelling with my sister.
Man: That’s fine. It’ll be £85 per night.
Woman: Is that how much it costs per person?
Man: No, that’s for the room, and the price includes breakfast.
Woman: So how much does it cost for 5 nights?
Man: The total price will be £ 425, madam.
Woman: OK, that’ll be fine.
Man: Can I take your name please?
Woman: Yes, it’s Anna Connelly.
Man: How do you spell Connelly please?
Woman: C-O-N-N-E-L-L-Y
Man: Ok, and your credit card number please?
Woman: Oh, well, I’d prefer to pay in cash when I arrive.
Man: I’m afraid it’s hotel policy to take a credit card number as confirmation of the reservation madam. We won’t charge your account, and you can pay in cash when you arrive.
Woman: So why do you need my credit card number?
Man: Well, it is hotel policy, just in case you don’t turn up or don’t cancel your reservation, and we will charge you for the first night of your stay.
Woman: Oh, I see, well I have a visa card.
Man: That’s fine. Could I take the number please?
Woman: Yes, it’s 4-9-8-5-6-74-3-2-1-3-3-4
Man: Do you have the expiry date please?
Woman: Yes, it’s 03 – 09.
Man: Ok, thank you, your twin room is reserved Ms. Connelly for 5 nights from the 21st to the 26th of June.
Woman: Thank you.
Man: Thank you and I look forward to seeing you on the 21st of June and hope you enjoy your stay at the George Hotel, please call if you have any further questions.
Woman: Thank you, goodbye.
Man: Goodbye.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on haunted hotels.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning the English words and phrases that you might need if you go on a ghost seeking experience.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to information on haunted hotel holidays.
So let’s start!

Woman:	Imagine you are in the UK and you have been invited for an unforgettable weekend at a haunted hotel. Here are some useful phrases you might want to remember:
What was that noise?
I heard somebody screaming.
Something went bump in the night.
The room has gone cold
Are you scared?
I’m not frightened.

Woman: Now let’s listen about haunted hotel holidays. Adapted from haunted accommodation .com:
Woman:	If you are looking for an unforgettable experience, you should go for an overnight stay in a haunted hotel. There are hundreds of properties in the UK that claim they are haunted by all manner of restless ghosts from young children to old men. Ghost seekers from all over the world check into these hotels in hopes of witnessing a real apparition. Before you book your stay, there are a few things you should know:
Avoid "spooky" dates, such as Halloween: rooms are much more expensive!
Research the story of the property before you go. Ghost-chasing is more fun if you know what you're looking for.
Leave small children at home!
There may be a room that gets more activity than others. Call the hotel staff ahead of your stay with special requests -- chances are they'll help out if they can.

Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to check into a hotel.
Before starting, let me first explain that in this lesson you’ll be listening to some useful English words, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!

Woman:	Imagine your company or university has sent you on a congress in a foreign country. They have given you your airline tickets and made your hotel reservation, all you need to do is get on the plane, find your hotel and check in. Here are some useful words and phrases you need to remember before you arrive at the hotel:

Man:	The reception, or the Front Office
Woman:	this is in the entrance of the hotel, and it is the desk where you go to check in and out. It is often the information desk also, so if you have any questions or need anything go to the reception desk. Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Hello, is this the reception desk?
Man:	No, this is the concierge madam, reception is just over there on the left.
Woman: Oh, thank you.
Man:	Good afternoon welcome to reception, how can I help you?
Woman:	I’d like to check in please.

Man:	Your Room Key
Woman:	This is what you need to enter your hotel room. In some hotels it is a normal key which you must leave at reception whenever you go out, but, in many hotels it is a plastic magnetic card. Listen to this short conversation
Man:	Ok, Here’s the key to your room.
Woman:	Is this a key?
Man:	Yes, it is a plastic swipe key. Just insert it into the slot and it will open your door. You can also use it like a credit card to charge drinks, room service or phone calls to your account.
Man:	Smoking or non-smoking room.
Woman: Do you want to smoke in your hotel room, or do you want a nicotine free zone? Listen to this example:
Man: Would you like a smoking or a non-smoking room?
Woman: Really? I can smoke in the hotel? Smoking, please.
Man: Yes, you can smoke in your room, but, refrain from smoking in other parts of the hotel, unless it’s a specified smoking area.
Man:	Directions to your room
Woman:	How do you get to your room? Which floor is it on? Some hotels have more than one lift and staircase, which one do you take? For example:
Man:	Your room is 625. It’s on the 6th floor.
Woman:	How do I get there? Is there a lift?
Man:	Directions to all the hotel rooms are indicated on the walls with arrows. You need to take the lift over there, then turn left and follow the directions on the landing.
Man:	A porter
Woman:	That’s someone who can carry your bags to your room – remember to tip him. Listen to this example:
Woman:	Oh, thank you. Now I just need to know if there is anyone who could help me with my luggage.
Man:	I’ll call you a porter, and he’ll take your bags for you.
Man:	Hotel facilities
Woman:	The services provided by the hotel, such as, a business centre, a gym, a restaurant. For example:
Woman:	Could you tell me if there is a business centre in the hotel, where I can access the internet?
Man:	Yes, it’s just over there, and a list of all the hotel facilities is in this brochure.
Man:	Additional charges to the room.
Woman:	These are additional costs if you use certain hotel services, so check the telephone tariffs before you make a phone call from your room, also, the mini-bar price list before you take a coca cola from the fridge in your room. Now listen:
Man:	OK, that’s £345 madam.
Woman:	Excuse me, this can’t be right, I’ve stayed here 2 nights and the price is £95 a night. What are all these additional charges?
Man:	Well you had 3 coca colas, 2 oranges juices and a packet of peanuts from your mini bar, and you called Italy several times.
Woman:	But an additional £155, that’s outrageous!
Man:	Well the additional charges are clearly indicated in the rooms…

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to make comparisons when choosing hotel accommodation.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning the English grammar you need to know to compare two things.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to make choices on different types of accommodation.
So let’s start!

Woman: If you want to compare one syllable adjectives, such as big, long, high, cheap etc. You add “er” to the end of the word and add “than” for example:

Is a guest house cheaper than a hotel?

Is a double room bigger than a twin room?

If it is a multi-syllable adjective, such as, expensive, beautiful, economical etc. You put more or less before the adjective then add than, for example:

Is June more expensive than May??

Is Canterbury more beautiful than Oxford?

Is it less expensive in low season?
Woman: Now let’s listen to these useful words in the dialogue: pay attention to the comparisons made.
Imagine you are going on holiday to a foreign country and need to decide where to stay. A good idea is to call the city’s tourist information office and ask them for advice:
Man:	Good Afternoon, Canterbury tourist information office, how may I help you?
Woman:	Hello, I’m calling about hotel information in your city. I plan to come there in May, and would like to know what types of hotels you have and how much they cost.
Man:	Well, May is still low season, so everything is less expensive, but, it would depend on what you are looking for, as we have everything from 5 star hotels to bed and breakfasts and even youth hostels.
Woman:	Well, I’d prefer a hotel, are they cheaper outside of the city centre?
Man:	Canterbury is actually quite a small town, so even an hotels on the outskirts are within walking distance, but, they are less expensive than the central ones. We also have some very good bed and breakfasts with excellent facilities in the centre.
Woman:	Oh, excuse me, could you explain the difference between a hotel and a bed and breakfast, I’m a little confused.
Man:	Certainly, a bed and breakfast doesn’t have the same license as a hotel, and tend to be run by a family, but, some are of excellent quality, and have bigger rooms than many hotels, and are much cheaper.
Woman:	Do they have any other facilities?
Man:	Most of them only have bedrooms, bathrooms, a TV room and the breakfast room, so they do have fewer facilities than a hotel, but it depends I guess on how long you are planning to stay in your hotel, there’s a lot to see in and around Canterbury.
Woman: Yes, I know I’m actually coming to research cricket, so I’d like to know which hotels are nearer to Kent Count Cricket Ground, than the city centre. I heard there is a Happy hotel in Canterbury is it part of the same group as the one in Dublin.
Man: No, I don’t think so, the Canterbury Happy hotel is an independent hotel and not part of a chain. If you like I can send you a list of all the hotels and bed and breakfasts near the cricket ground.
Woman: That would be great!
Man:	Do you have an e-mail address?
Woman: Yes, it’s Kaybrown@hotmail.com
Man:	Is that K-A-Y-B-R-O-W-N?
Woman:	Yes, and the first letter is a capital K.
Man:	Ok, I’ll send you a list this afternoon, and if you have any other questions or need any other information please feel free to call me or email us.
Woman:	Thank you! Good bye!

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.

In questa lezione imparerai la formazione del COMPARATIVO.

Osserva queste parole come osserveresti un’immagine: qual è la differenza tra loro?

La risposta apparentemente più ovvia spesso è quella giusta!
1.	CHEAP
2.	EXPENSIVE

Soluzione:
Cheap è una parola corta
Expensive è una parola lunga

Adesso osserva l’uso del comparativo di maggioranza in queste frasi:
1.	My car is cheap, but yours is cheaper.
2.	A Rolls Royce is more expensive than a Toyota.

Possiamo così dedurre la regola sull’uso del comparativo in inglese:
•	Si aggiunge –er alle parole CORTE (cheap -> cheaper)
•	Si mette more prima delle parole LUNGHE (expensive -> more expensive)

Ricorda che:
•	per mettere a confronto due cose, devi usare THAN (Tom drives faster than his brother)
•	nel comparativo di minoranza, aggettivi e avverbi restano invariati (Peter is less intelligent than James).

Welcome to the English Blog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on abbreviations used to describe holiday accommodation.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning some useful abbreviations.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to decide what type of accommodation to book.
So let’s start!

Woman:	Imagine you are staying in England and decide to visit an English seaside town for a long weekend, you are looking through a holiday brochure with a friend but you aren’t sure what all the abbreviations mean:
FB means Full Board, that means breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price.
HB means Half Board, that means breakfast and dinner are included in the price.
BB means Bed and Breakfast, that literally means you get a bed and breakfast. – pay attention to if it’s a continental breakfast or a full breakfast, there is a big difference
PS means personal shower, so your room will have its own shower.
PB means personal bathroom, so your room will have its own toilet and bath.
RR means room rate, so it is the price per room per night.
PP means per person, so it is the price per person per night.

Woman: Now let’s listen to these useful words in the dialogue:
Man:	You know it would be great fun to go to Brighton for the weekend, it’s such an exciting place.
Woman:	Yes, it would be nice to see a traditional English seaside, but, I think it’s best if we organise somewhere to stay first.
Man:	Well, this brochure has loads of places, hotels, flats, bed and breakfasts and guest houses.
Woman:	What’s a guest house?
Man:	Well I checked in the dictionary and they used to be called boarding houses, they are converted houses like bed and breakfasts, but you can have lunch and dinner there if you want too.
Woman:	Aaah! So that’s why this one on page 9, Sunny View, says optional meal service.
Man:	Yes, look, the FB means full board, and HB means half board.
Woman:	So does half board mean we’d get breakfast and lunch?
Man:	You must be joking! Lunch isn’t the most important meal in England, it means breakfast and dinner.
Woman:	Mmm, I’m not sure, look at the photo of the room, it doesn’t look very nice, and there isn’t a photo of the bathroom.
Man:	That’s because the rooms don’t have personal bathrooms, look there’s no PB symbol, and in the small print at the bottom it says communal bathrooms.
Woman:	Oh I don’t know about that, look at this little hotel on page 12, the prices are similar, and it says PB and BB. So that means, they have a bathroom and we’d get breakfast, because I’d think I’d rather eat out as we are only going for such a short time.
Man:	That’s true, look the price is only £60 a night including a full breakfast.
Woman:	Is that each?
Man:	No, it says RR, which means the price of the room not per person, so if we go on Friday night and come back on Monday morning, it would only be £90 each.
Woman:	That’s good, and if they have a breakfast buffet, we can eat loads before we set off each morning. I think we should call straight away and see if they have any vacancies.
Man:	OK. Let’s do it.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the English Blog.
