Saluti e presentazioni - Lessico
Leggendo la lezione di oggi capirai che un semplice saluto può avere varie connotazioni.
The word Hello is mostly used as an informal way to greet somebody. However, it can also fulfil other functions and convey other meanings, often with ironic purposes.
You can say ‘hello’ to attract somebody’s attention, even if you don’t know them. For example, if you enter a place and you can’t see anybody, you may say ‘Hello? Is anybody there?’
You also say ’hello’ when you answer the phone or when you make a phone call.
- Hello, Monarch Hotel. How can I help you?
- Hello, this is Jane Davies. Can you put me through to room 305, please?
People can also say ‘hello’ to underline the fact that somebody has said something foolish or is not paying attention.
- Mike would never cheat on you. You must be mistaken.
- Hello? I saw him kissing another girl last night! I’m sure that was him!
- Hello? What’s wrong with you today?
- Nothing, I’m just a bit nervous about tomorrow’s exam.

Rugby - Lessico
Leggendo questa lezione scoprirai l’origine del soprannome “All Blacks” dato a due squadre di rugby.
New Zealand’s rugby players have been called “All Blacks” since 1905. A British reporter said that the players were so good that they could be “all backs”, meaning they could all play in defence. But newspapers made a mistake and wrote “all blacks” instead. Since the team’s strip is black, they have kept the name.
Players of the Welsh team Neath are also called “All Blacks” because they have been wearing a black uniform since 1880, when one of the team players, Dick Gordon, died after a match.

Internet - Lessico
Questa lezione ti spiegherà l’origine di una parola molto usata nell’era di Internet.
SPAM Unwanted e-mail messages are called spam, but where does the term actually come from? Webopedia.com gives two different explanations.
The word may come from a song by the Monty Python, a famous group of British comedians: “Spam spam spam spam, spam spam spam spam, lovely spam, wonderful spam…”. The song is a repetition of words with no value, just like junk mail.
Others think that junk mail has been called “spam” by a computer group lab at the University of Southern California. They maintain that unwanted mail has the same characteristics as SPAM™, a tinned meat product: nobody wants it, no one eats it, and only few people like it!
