Saluti e presentazioni - Lessico
Leggendo la lezione di oggi capirai che un semplice saluto può avere varie connotazioni.
The word Hello is mostly used as an informal way to greet somebody. However, it can also fulfil other functions and convey other meanings, often with ironic purposes.
You can say ‘hello’ to attract somebody’s attention, even if you don’t know them. For example, if you enter a place and you can’t see anybody, you may say ‘Hello? Is anybody there?’
You also say ’hello’ when you answer the phone or when you make a phone call.
- Hello, Monarch Hotel. How can I help you?
- Hello, this is Jane Davies. Can you put me through to room 305, please?
People can also say ‘hello’ to underline the fact that somebody has said something foolish or is not paying attention.
- Mike would never cheat on you. You must be mistaken.
- Hello? I saw him kissing another girl last night! I’m sure that was him!
- Hello? What’s wrong with you today?
- Nothing, I’m just a bit nervous about tomorrow’s exam.

Saluti e presentazioni - Grammatica
I met my boyfriend at a party two years ago.
Have you two met? (Vi hanno presentati?)
Nice to meet you!
Meet significa anche ‘darsi appuntamento’, ‘incontrarsi’ e ‘andare a prendere qualcuno’:
‘What time shall we meet?’
‘Let’s meet at 8pm in front of the cinema.’
I’ll meet you at the station.
I met Brenda at the supermarket this morning. (Ho incontrato per caso Brenda al supermercato stamattina).
Know significa conoscere già qualcuno.
I have known Eric for 10 years
(Conosco Eric da 10 anni).
