Rugby - Lettura
Questa lezione ti darà alcune informazioni sulla danza resa celebre dagli All Blacks, la squadra di rugby neozelandese.
Haka is a traditional dance derived from the indigenous Maori of New Zealand. It is the expression of the passion, vigour and identity of these people. According to (secondo) a Maori legend, the dance was created by the son of two deities (divinità), the Sun God and the Summer maid (fanciulla).
Haka is not merely (semplicemente) a pastime (passatempo) of the Maori but it was also a custom (usanza) of high social importance in the welcoming (accoglienza) and entertainment (intrattenimento) of visitors. Tribal reputation depended on the ability to perform (eseguire) the haka. Haka was also used as an act of defiance (sfida) and protest. Most (gran parte delle) haka seen today are “haka taparahi”, haka without weapons (senza armi). Haka has been made popular overseas (all’estero) by the All Blacks, the rugby players who perform it before their matches. This dance reflects the determination and high level skill (abilità) which characterizes New Zealand's National game. Haka has become a distinctive feature (caratteristica) of the All Blacks, who perform the dance with precision and intensity.

Rugby - Lessico
Leggendo questa lezione scoprirai l’origine del soprannome “All Blacks” dato a due squadre di rugby.
New Zealand’s rugby players have been called “All Blacks” since 1905. A British reporter said that the players were so good that they could be “all backs”, meaning they could all play in defence. But newspapers made a mistake and wrote “all blacks” instead. Since the team’s strip is black, they have kept the name.
Players of the Welsh team Neath are also called “All Blacks” because they have been wearing a black uniform since 1880, when one of the team players, Dick Gordon, died after a match.
