FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some English idiomatic expressions.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some English idioms you’ll then hear a short explanation of these expressions.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to a conversation about a visit to America.
So let’s start!

Woman: Idioms are expressions whose meaning is different from the literal meaning of the individual words. There are a lot of these in the English language. Now listen to a few of them:
Man: I’m pulling your leg.
Woman: This means that somebody is joking, that what they are saying is not true:
Man: Okay, and for homework, you have to do exercises 1 to 32.
Woman: What?
Man: don’t worry I’m pulling your leg. Just exercises 1 and 2 for homework.
Woman: Thank goodness for that.

Woman: I rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous in New York.
Man: This means to meet and spend time with famous people
Man: Do you miss being a journalist in America?
Woman: Oh yes, I had some interesting times rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. I even met Madonna several times.
Woman: I’m putting my foot down.
Man: This means you strongly oppose a decision or an action and you are going to stop it happening.
Man: What are you doing?
Woman: This world cup is driving me crazy. You have watched every match, videoed them, watched them again. I’m putting my foot down you can watch one match a day from now on.

Woman: Now listen to a dialogue between two friends. One of them has just returned from work experience in America.

Man: So did you enjoy it over there?
Woman: It was fantastic! It’s a different world.
Man: Did you get to rub shoulders with Bush and co?
Woman: No, but I met some interesting people.
Man: Anyone famous?
Woman: Well, I was at an art exhibition in New York, chatting with a friend, and you’ll never guess who came over and asked if I was English?
Man: Who?
Woman: Sean Connery.
Man: No way, you met Sean Connery.
Woman: Yes, he was planning a new movie, heard my accent and asked if I wanted to be in it.
Man: No way! So what happened?
Woman: (laugh)
Man: What’s so funny?
Woman: I’m pulling your leg the most famous person I met was Mickey Mouse at Disneyland.
Man: Honestly!

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
