Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on how to get a temporary summer job in England in order to improve your English.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English vocabulary. You’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to a telephone interview with a job agency.
So let’s start!
Woman: A Temp.
Man: A temp is a contraction of the word temporary, and it refers to a job that is done for a limited period of time. Listen to this short dialogue:
Woman: How come you stayed in London so long?
Man: Well, I went for a holiday, but I managed to get a job as a temp. So I stayed another month.
Woman: What’s a temp?
Man: It’s temporary work, I worked in an office filing for 3 weeks, it was a bit boring, but at least I improved my English and I earned some money so I could really enjoy London.
Woman: Temping.
Man: This a form of a verb to say you are working in a temporary position. Listen to this example:
Woman: Heh, how are you? When are you coming back to Italy?
Man: Well, I’ve starting working now.
Woman: What? How come?
Man: I’m temping.
Woman: What do you mean?
Man: I’m temping, I’ve got a temporary summer job in a factory packing bread, it pays really well and it means I can stay in London for longer.
Woman: Temp agency.
Man: This is an agency that organises temporary work for people in different companies to cover holiday or sickness leave, or when a company requires more personnel for a short period of time.
Woman: Hello, “Shirlie’s temping agency, how can I help you?”
Man: Hi, my name is John Smith and I’m a student, and I’d like to apply to be a temp this summer.
Woman: A good way to improve your English is to work as a temp. in the summer. Now listen to a telephone conversation between a student and a temp agency.
Woman: Good Morning, Action Recruitment Temps, Joanne speaking, how can I help you?
Man: Hello, I’d like to work as a temp this summer.
Woman: OK, can I take your name please?
Man: Yes, it’s Luke Roma.
Woman: And how old are you?
Man: I’m 21.
Woman: Are you in London at the moment?
Man: No, I’m actually calling from Italy, but I’ll be in London in July, which is the reason for my call, I’d like to temp while I am there.
Woman: OK, when exactly will you be arriving, and how long do you want to work for?
Man: I’ll be arriving on the 6th of July and hopefully staying until the end of September.
Woman: Will you have accommodation? As only our jobs in hotels provide this.
Man: Yes, I’ll be staying at my cousin’s.
Woman: OK, well we actually have a lot of vacancies for factory work in August, it’s not very interesting but it pays well. Are you interested in this kind of work?
Man: Absolutely.
Woman: OK; well, if you could e-mail me your CV and references and we can take it from there.
Man: OK; what’s your email address please?
Woman: It’s ART@temps.com.
Man: Thank you Joanne, I’ll send it to you straight away.
Woman: Thank you, and call back in 3 days time, and I’ll let you know exactly what work we have available. Have a nice day.

Vorrei far notare laddove si parla di "temping" la seguente frase "Well, I’ve starting working now". Per quanto ne so io penso che sia grammaticalmente sbagliata. Credo che si debba dire "I've started working" oppure "I've been starting working" o ancora "I'm starting working" a seconda del contesto. Ma, ripeto, non ho mai sentito, nè letto la forma grammaticale usata per la frase inserita nella trascrizione. La mia chiaramente non è una critica, ci mancherebbe altro, ma solo una curiosità. Tra l'altro, se frequentiamo questo blog è per imparare, e/o mantenere aggiornata la lingua inglese. Pertanto mi piacerebbe sapere se si tratta di un errore o no.
