Letture - Vocabolario - Trascrizione

FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting English about books.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful English vocabulary on literature. You’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!

Woman: Library.
Man: This is a room or building that contains a collection of books than can be looked at for reference or borrowed. Listen to this example:
Woman: Do you know why I love London?
Man: For its nightlife?
Woman: No, for its libraries, I can spend hours just sitting reading so many books.
Man: Yes I love the reference section of the British library. I don’t know how they organise so many books and articles.
Man: Bookshop.
Woman: This is a shop that sells books. Now listen:
Woman: Hello, do you have English dictionaries?
Man: This bookshop sells many kinds, would you like a compact one or a….
Woman: A pocket one if you have them.
Man: Book worm.
Woman: This is a person who likes reading a lot of books. Listen to this:
Woman: I can’t put this book down.
Man: I’ve noticed, but can you turn the light off?
Woman: Just one more page.
Man: You are such a book worm, 5 more minutes and I’m turning the light off, it’s nearly 2 in the morning.

Man: Borrow.
Woman: This means to take or receive something from somebody that you intend to give back, (usually after a short time.) Be careful not to confuse borrow with its opposite lend. Listen to this:
Woman: Hi, I’d like to join the library so I can borrow some books.
Man: Okay. Are you a student?
Woman: Yes.
Man: Can I see your student card please?
Man: Thank you, now you are a member Ms. Lawson, you can borrow up to 10 books at a time.
Woman: How long can I borrow the books for?
Man: Some books can be taken out of the library for 1 week, and some for 3 weeks, the instructions are inside each book.
Woman: Thank you.

Man: Lend.
Woman: This means to allow somebody to use something for a short time or to give somebody money that must be given back after a certain period of time. Listen to this:
Woman: Heh Tom can you lend me 10 pounds to get lunch, I’ve left my purse at home?
Man: Sure, no problem, give it back to me tomorrow.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog
