FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting English on how to talk to your friends about reading.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful phrases you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to two people discussing reading.
So let’s start!

Woman: Now let’s learn some phrases that will help you talk about books.

Woman: What kind of books do you like?
Man: This means what type of books interest you, for example romantic books, comical books, historical books etc. Now listen to an example of this phrase:
Woman: What kind of books do you like?
Man: I like detective stories and thrillers.

Woman: I don’t like reading at all. It’s boring! I prefer watching films.
Man: When something doesn’t interest you, it is boring and you are bored by it. Now listen to an example of this phrase:
Woman: What are you reading?
Man: Nothing exciting, just some Latin compositions, they’re a bit boring.
Woman: It’s a page-turner.
Man: This means a book is very interesting and you couldn’t stop reading it. For example:
Woman: I loved the Da Vinci Code, I read it twice. Have you seen the film yet?
Man: Not yet, but I want to. The book was fantastic, it was a real page-turner, I couldn’t put it down.

Woman: What is the best book you have ever read?
Man: This means what is the best book you have read in your whole life up until now. Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: What’s the best book you’ve ever read?
Man: Mmm, I’m not sure. I’ve read so many, what about you?
Woman: “Deception Point” is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Woman: I love thrillers. I enjoy true life stories. I like science fiction.
Man: You can show your preference, by stating different degrees from I like, enjoy or love. For example:
Woman: What do you like reading?
Man: Well, I love reading the newspaper in the morning, and I really enjoy reading the sport columns.
Woman: I meant books.
Man: Oh....
Woman: Now you will listen to a short conversation between two people discussing what kind of things they like to read.

Man: What are you reading? You look as though you’re in another world.
Woman: I’m reading “Angels and Demons.”
Man: Is it good?
Woman: Well it is a page-turner, but, now I’m half way through I think the story is similar to the “Da Vinci Code.” What are you reading?
Man: Just a car magazine, I’m looking for a new car.
Woman: Would you like to borrow a book? I’ve got lots here. What kind of books do you like reading?
Man: I don’t really like reading. I find it boring. I’d rather watch a film.
Woman: Films are good, but I enjoy reading when I’m travelling, it makes the journey go faster. Would you like my newspaper?
Man: Yes, please, I love reading the news.
Woman: Here you are.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
