FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting English idioms that include weather terms. There are also a lot of songs that include the weather, such as, “The heat is on,” “ I’m walking on sunshine” and “It’s raining men,” etc.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful English expressions, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!

Woman: I’m on cloud nine
Man: This means you are very happy and excited about something. “I’m on top of the world,” is a similar idiom, used by the Irish.
Listen to this example:
Woman: Why are you smiling so much? What have you been up to?
Man: I can’t tell you, it’s a surprise, and I’m on cloud nine, so I can’t stop smiling.
Woman: Well I hope it’s a nice surprise, I don’t like bad ones.

Woman: Every cloud has a silver lining
Man: This is a proverb, used when something bad has happened, (or is happening to you,) it means that something good or positive will come out of the situation.
Now listen to this example:
Woman: What a bad day at work, all the computers had a virus, and we had no internet connection. What a day!
Man: Well every cloud has a silver lining, it’s over now, so relax. At least people practiced how to work with a pen and paper again.
Woman: You are always so positive.

Woman: She’s a ray of sunshine.
Man: This is used to describe a person who has a positive attitude to life, and makes other people happy.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: I love teaching children.
Man: Me too, I have some lovely rays of sunshine on my course. They always cheer me up.
Woman: I know, they are much more positive than grown ups.

Woman: Get wind of something.
Man: This means that you get to know about a secret piece of information
Listen to this:
Woman: Heh, are you free, I’ve got wind of something important.
Man: Tell me.
Woman: Well I heard through the grape vine, that they are going to give us a pay rise next month.
Man: Really? Well that is good news.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog
