Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some essential English differences between British English and American English language for expressions at the post office.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful, expressions, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!
Woman: Post
Man: This is used in British English, both as a noun and a verb. It means the letters and parcels you receive, and also those you send at the post office.
Woman: Hello, I’d like to post these letters please
Man: Would you like to post them 1st class or 2nd class.
Woman: 1st class please.
Woman: Mail
Man: This is American English for post. It refers to the letters and parcels you receive, and also the system of sending them.
Now listen to this example:
Woman: Wow we’ve got a lot of mail today.
Man: Well, there’s nothing for me.
Woman: You’re right. Half of it is junk mail.
Woman: Postman or mailman
Man: Postman is British English, and mailman is American English. It refers to the person who delivers letters, parcels etc. to your house.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: The postman has been.
Man: How do you know?
Woman: I just heard the post arrive through the letter box.
Woman: Postbox or mailbox
Man: A postbox is British English, and a mailbox is American English. It is a box in a public area where you put letters etc. that you want to send. A postbox is also referred to as a pillar box in British English for the traditional tall round red post box.

Woman: We must find the postbox. I don’t want to miss the last post at 5pm.
Man: Look there’s a post box over there.
Woman: Fantastic, let’s hope they haven’t collected the last post already.
