Ufficio postale - Vocabolario - Trascrizione
Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some useful vocabulary to use at the post office.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful English words, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!
Woman: A stamp
Man: A stamp, is a small piece of paper that you stick on your post, to show that you have paid for it to be posted.
Listen to this example:
Woman: Do we have any stamps left?
Man: I’m not sure, check the top drawer of my desk.
Woman: No, I can’t see any.
Man: How many do you need?
Woman: Just one. I want to send a birthday card to my father.
Man: I’ll go to the post office and buy some more.
Woman: First Class and Second Class Stamps.
Man: If you want to post a standard size letter to another part of the Britain, there are two types of stamps. 1st class stamps are more expensive, but the post should arrive in the next day. 2nd class stamps are less expensive, and take a few days to arrive.
For example:
Woman: Hello, I’d like 4 stamps please.
Man: Is your post for Britain or International.
Woman: For London.
Man: Would you like 1st or 2nd class stamps?
Woman: 1st class please, I need these letters to arrive as soon as possible.
Woman: Letters and envelopes.
Man: A letter is a written or printed message that you send to someone. E.g. A thank you letter.
An envelope is the paper cover for a letter, that you put the letter in before posting it. You seal the back of an envelope, write the address on the front, and stick a stamp on the top right hand corner.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: I’m tired of going to the post office. Before Christmas, I was sending things every day, and now I’ve got lots of thank you letters to write for the lovely gifts everyone sent us.
Man: Shall I help you put them in the envelopes.
Woman: Yes, please, but, write the address on the envelope before you seal them, or you’ll get confused.
Woman: A parcel or a package.
Man: This is bigger than a letter, and is something such as a gift or magazines, that you put in a box or a very large brown envelope. Their postage depends on where they going, how much they weigh and how fast you want them to arrive.
Listen to this:
Man: What are you doing?
Woman: I’m packing my brother’s birthday present into a box.
Man: But his birthday is next month.
Woman: Yes, but you know what the post is like. I want to make sure that the parcel arrives in time for his birthday.
Woman: Registered Mail / Recorded Mail.
Man: There are various types of registered and recorded mail. People often use this service for parcels and letters that are important, and they want to ensure that they arrive. You pay a lot more than regular mail, but, there is a guarantee that the post will definitely arrive or you get compensation if it doesn’t.
Listen to this:
Woman: Hello, I’d like to send this parcel by registered mail to Italy. How much will it be?
Man: Let me weigh it first, if it’s under 3 kilos, it will be £25.
Man: Yes it is. Can you fill in this form please.
Woman: OK.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog
