If you describe somebody or something as a pain in the neck, you mean that they are extremely annoying or irritating. Jim’s mother is a pain in the neck. She calls him every morning at 7 o’clock, even on Sundays!
If you touch a sore spot you mention something which causes embarrassment for someone or which upsets them. When I asked Mary about Tom I realized I had touched a sore spot: she was still in love with him.
If you sweeten the pill, you try and make it easier for somebody to accept an unpleasant or difficult situation.
The band had to cancel the concert, but they tried to sweeten the pill of disappointment by promising their fans they would reschedule it soon.
If you describe something or a situation as a bitter pill to swallow, you mean that it is unpleasant or difficult to accept. To meet Alison’s new boyfriend was a bitter pill to swallow for John.
