FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some essential English new words, that have appeared in recent times.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful, English expressions, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!

Woman: “oholic” or “aholic”
Man: The English vocabulary is forever increasing, and by adding the endings, (or rather suffixes) new words are formed, to mean somebody is addicted to something. If the beginning of the word ends in “o” such as alcohol, then you use “oholic”. But if there is no “o” in the first part of the word, you add “aholic” to the end of the word, for example, workaholic.
Woman: I’m getting worried about you, I think you’re an alcoholic, the first thing you do when you come home is to pour yourself a drink.
Man: Don’t be ridiculous, an alcoholic is somebody who needs a drink, when they first wake up in the morning. I’m just relaxing from a long day in the office.
Woman: Mmm, I’m not so sure, I think you are becoming an addict.

Woman: Shopaholic
Man: A shopaholic is somebody who is addicted to shopping, and research in the UK, has shown that these people, often women, feel sick and depressed if they don’t go shopping.
Now listen to this example:
Woman: What’s the problem? Your face has gone white.
Man: Have you seen the credit card bill for this month? It’s almost £3,000. What have you been buying?
Woman: Not much, just a few tops I needed for work and.....
Man: I’m cutting up the cards, you can’t continue spending like this, you’re a shopaholic. If you see something you like, you just buy it.
Woman: No don’t do that, I have to buy presents.

Woman: Chocoholic
Man: This is a person addicted to eating chocolate
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Where have all the dark chocolates gone?
Man: Don’t ask me, you’re the chocoholic.
Woman: That’s not true.

Woman: Workaholic
Man: This is somebody who works a lot, and does a lot of overtime. Even when they have finished work, they are thinking about work, or continue to work at home.
Listen to this:
Woman: Please can you close the computer, and tidy up those papers, we have guests arriving for dinner in half an hour.
Man: I just need to finish this report, I won’t be more than five minutes.
Woman: You’re a workaholic, you always bring work home with you, you must do over 70 hours a week, and your company only pays you for 35.
Man: Okay, okay, I’m closing my computer, I’ll finish this later.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog
