Questa lezione ti svelerà l’origine dei soprannomi di alcune squadre di calcio britanniche.
The origin of football teams’ nicknames (soprannomi) in Britain dates back to (risale al) the 19th century, when most British clubs were founded. During that time Britain had become industrialised, and people from rural areas moved (si trasferirono) to cities in the North to work in factories (fabbriche). Workers from different trades (imprese) founded local football teams to build a sense of self-identity. This explains why many of the stadiums in Britain are built (costruiti) in the centre of working class (classe operaia) areas of cities and also accounts for (spiega) the origin of teams nicknames. For instance, Sheffield United players are called Blades (lame) because Sheffield is famous for its steel (acciaio) industry.
Arsenal players are called Gunners (artiglieri), because the team was founded by people working at Woolwich Arsenal (arsenale) in London. The Everton players’ nickname is Toffees (è un tipo di caramella), because of a popular mint (alla menta) toffee produced in the Liverpool district. Before every game free toffees are thrown (vengono gettati) into the crowd (folla) by the famous Toffee Lady, dressed in a traditional skirt, shawl (scialle) and hat.
