Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English Vocabulary for the London Underground.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful English words followed by an explanation of how they are used.
So let’s start!
Woman: A Tube Map
Man: A tube map is a drawing of the underground system with all the different lines and stations.
Listen to this:
Woman: How do we get to Convent Garden?
Man: I’m not sure. Check the Tube map.
Woman: It’s so confusing all these different coloured lines.
Man: No it’s not. There’s a colour code at the bottom. I think we take the Circle line.
Woman: Can’t we just walk? The buildings are so beautiful here.
Man: I guess so, but, let’s hope we don’t get lost. London is very big.
Woman: Line
Man: A line is one of the sections of the underground connecting different parts of the city. For example, the circle line, the northern line, the Victoria line etc.
For example:
Woman: Are you sure we are on the right line?
Man: I’m sure we’re on the right line, but, I’m not sure if we’re going in the right direction. Listen out for the next announcement.
Woman: Zone
Man: London is divided into 6 zones, and ticket prices vary according to which zones you need to travel through.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Look our hotel is near Hyde Park, and that’s within Zone 1.
Man: Fantastic. It’ll be a lot cheaper to travel around. I’ll just get us Zone 1 and 2 travel cards then. Wait for me here.
Woman: Queue
Man: A queue is a line of people that are waiting for something.
Listen to this:
Woman: Excuse me, what do you think you are doing? There’s a queue here, we’re all waiting to buy tickets.
Man: Oh I’m sorry, I’ll go to the end of the line then.
