Metropolitana - Inglese britannico e americano - Trascrizione
Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some American and British English names for underground rail systems.
So let’s start!
Woman: The Underground
Man: This is what British people call a railway system under the ground.
Woman: How do you get to work in the morning?
Man: I take the underground.
Woman: Is it fast?
Man: It’s faster than driving. It takes me about 45 minutes on the northern line.
Woman: And you can read your newspaper while you’re on the underground.
Man: Precisely.
Woman: The Subway
Man: This is what American people call a railway system under the ground. But note in British English this means a tunnel under a busy road that pedestrians use to walk from one side to the other.
For example:
Woman: Excuse me, can you tell me where the nearest subway stop is?
Man: I’m sorry?
Woman: The subway, the railway system under the ground.
Man: Aah! You mean the underground. It’s over there on your right.
Woman: Thankyou.
Woman: The Tube
Man: The underground system in London, is called The Tube, because of the shape of the trains and tunnels.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Excuse me how do I get to Piccadilly Circus?
Man: You need to take The Tube.
Woman: Which line should I take?
Man: The Piccadilly line will take you directly there.
Woman: Thank you.
Woman: The Metro
Man: The underground system in Washington DC is called The Metro. Note this is also the British English name for it in many European cities.
Listen to this:
Woman: Excuse me, we’re lost, can you tell us where The Underground is?
Man: You mean, The Subway, or rather The Metro here in Washington DC. It’s on the corner over there.
Woman: Thank you.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog
