Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on anti-spam tips.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English expressions; you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to information about how to use the internet safely with some anti spam tips.
So let’s start!
Woman: Does your email account get bombarded with spam mail everyday?
Listen and learn how to avoid it.
Woman: Spam mail
Man: Spam is the name given to the practice of sending unwanted messages to people’s email addresses,
Listen to this short conversation:
Man: I don’t believe it my inbox is full.
Woman: Full of what? I only have 3 messages for work.
Man: Spam mail, I have over 56 messages.
Woman: I told you not to click on them, now you must put them all into junk mail.
Man: I think I’ll call the IT technician to solve this problem.
Woman: Junk Mail
Man: Junk is a noun that means something is useless or does not have much value. Junk mail is similar to spam mail, as it is unwanted emails sent to a person’s account.
For example
Woman: Crikey, now I’m getting junk mail on different diet products. Did you do something to my computer?
Man: I certainly did not. The IT guy said there’s some kind of virus going round.
Woman: Advertising
Man: Advertising means to put information on TV, in a newspaper, on the internet etc to persuade people to buy something. A lot of spam and junk mail are advertising different products to check that email accounts are “live”.
For example:
Woman: I love that telephone company’s advertisement.
Man: They are only advertising to get you to change to them.
Woman: With a good advert like that, they might persuade me.
Woman: Now let’s listen to some information on anti-spam tips adapted from www.banksafeonline.org.uk
Man: Anti-spam tips
“Spam” is the name given to the practice of sending unwanted messages to people’s email addresses, usually as advertising . This gives fraudsters a way of reaching Internet users based anywhere in the world. Spammers collect addresses from a number of sources including web sites or newsgroups.
Here are a few tips to help you reduce the amount of spam that you receive:
- Only share your e-mail address with people you know.
- Disguise your e-mail address on newsgroup posts or chat rooms, for example by inserting zeros instead of "o" (your.name@provider.com). This will prevent the automated programs that spammers use from reading your address;
- Do not allow your address to be sold to third parties when registering or buying products;
- Do not reply to spam emails or attempt to use the "remove me" link: this will confirm that your address is live and you will receive more spam!
- Do not open spam messages;
- Use an email programme that includes spam filters.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
