Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English about unwanted mail on the internet.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful English words, followed by an explanation of their meaning.
So let’s start!
Woman: To phish
Man: To phish means to carry out the activity of trying to get private information from a person in order to access their bank account details etc.
Now listen to this:
Woman: What are you doing?
Man: Somebody’s been phishing in my account?
Woman: What do you mean somebody’s been fishing?
Man: Not fishing? Phishing. They sound the same, but phishing is spelt with p-h- at the start.
Woman: I still don’t understand what you are talking about.
Man: It means that since we booked those flights on the internet, a phisher has been trying to access my credit card account. I’ll have to call the bank and change my details.
Woman: To spam
Man: These are electronic messages sent as unwanted emails to your email account.
For example:
Woman: Do you think this will work? Trying to sell typical Sicilian products on the internet.
Man: I hope so look at the spam I’ve designed. Now I’m going to send it out to the entire address book of yahoo users.
Woman: Are you sure this is not illegal?
Man: No! Lots of people send good spam messages, they are not all junk mail, it’s a good way of advertising for free. I hope it works.
Woman: To Spim
Man: This means to spam over instant messaging.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Which chat room are you on now?
Man: The usual destiny one.
Woman: Who’s Susan?
Man: I have no idea. I think I’m being spimmed, she keeps on sending me really strange instant messages.
Woman: The Web or the Net
Man: These are contractions used to talk about the internet, and the world wide web.
Listen to this:
Man: I’m just going on the net for a while.
Woman: The what?
Man: The internet silly. I want to check the news.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog
