Saluti e presentazioni - Grammatica - Trascrizione

FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on the differences between the verbs “meet” and “know.”
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning how to use the verbs “meet” and “know”.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to some useful sentences on how to use these verbs.
So let’s start!

Woman: Do you know the differences between “meet” and “know”? Listen and learn.
Woman: We use the verb “meet” to say that we know someone for the first time. The past tense of meet is met. We also use the expression “Nice to meet you!” when we are introduced and meet somebody for the first time.
Now listen to these examples:
Man: I met my wife in America.
Man: I met your sister last week.
Man+woman: Nice to meet you!

Woman: We also use the verb “meet” to make an appointment or a date.
For example:
Man: Let’s meet at 8pm outside the cinema.
Woman: OK, I’ll meet you there then.

Woman: The verb “know” means to be familiar with a person – i.e. to have met somebody before.
For example:
Woman: Do you know John?
Man: Yes, I met him at your last birthday party.

Woman: “Know” also means to have knowledge of something in your mind.
For example:
Woman: Do you know how to speak French?
Man: Yes, I know how to speak French, I studied it for 5 years.

Woman: Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.
Woman: Hello, I’m Susan from RLT Plastics, haven’t we met before?
Man: I don’t think so, I’m John from the GBS Corporation, nice to meet you.
Woman: Do excuse me, I thought we’d met at the last conference. Nice to meet you.
Man: Do you know many people here?
Woman: I don’t think so, there are always so many new faces at each conference. How about you?
Man: Only my work colleagues, this is our first presentation.
Woman: Really? Oh look there’s my boss over there, let’s go over and meet him. I’ll introduce you, he could be a useful contact for you, he knows everybody.
Man: Well thank you.
Woman: Hi Tom, I’d like to introduce you to John from the GBS Corporation.
Man: Nice to meet you.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
