Ospedale - Grammatica - Trascrizione
Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on adverbs of frequency.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning how to say how often you do something.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to a dialogue using these adverbs.
So let’s start!
Woman: Do you know how to say how frequently you do something? Listen and learn:
Woman: Adverbs of Frequency are used to say how often we do something. “Always” means 100% and at the other extreme is “never”, which means 0%.
Now listen to these examples:
Man: I always get up at 7am.
Man: I always have lunch at 1.30pm.
Man: I never use the tram.
Woman: To say something is less frequent than “always” we use “normally” or “usually” followed by “often”.
For example:
Man: I usually work in my garden at the weekend.
Woman: I often go to the cinema.
Woman: To say something is less frequent than “often”, we use “sometimes” followed by “not often”.
For example:
Woman: I sometimes walk to work.
Man: I don’t often use the tram.
Woman: Now let’s listen to these words in the dialogue: pay attention to how they are used.
Woman: How often do you go to the cinema?
Man: I usually go once a week. How about you?
Woman: I sometimes go once a week, but I always go at least twice a month.
Man: I sometimes go twice a week, if I’ve got the time.
Woman: What kind of films do you like?
Man: I love horror films.
Woman: Urgh, I never watch horror films. I wouldn’t be able to sleep afterwards.
Man: Well I also like science fiction films too.
Woman: I don’t often watch them either.
Man: What kind of films do you watch at the cinema then?
Woman: Well, I always check to see what the new releases are, and I usually choose a comedy if there is one.
Man: Yes, I like those too, in fact I like most kinds of films, that’s why I go to the cinema so often.
Woman: Well check the newspaper, to see what’s on, and we can go tonight if you like.
Man: That’s a good idea.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
