Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some survival English vocabulary that will help you if you need to see a doctor or go to a hospital in England.
Before starting, let me first explain that you’ll be listening to some useful English vocabulary, followed by an explanation and an example of their use.
So let’s start!
Woman: To be ill.
Man: Ill is an adjective that means you are not well or in good health.
Listen to this example:
Woman: Are you feeling any better yet?
Man: Not really, I feel really ill, I can’t move.
Woman: Let me take your temperature.
Man: Do I have a fever?
Woman: Yes, you do. I’m going to call the doctor, you’ve been ill for 3 days now, and you are just getting worse.
Man: Urrrh.
Woman: To be sick.
Man: To be sick also means you are not well, but, it can also mean you need to vomit.
For example:
Man: Are you ok? Your face is as white as a sheet.
Woman: No, I’m not, and I think I’m going to be sick
Man: Come on let me help you to the bathroom.
Woman: I think I’ve got food poisoning, you’d better call work, and tell them I’m not coming in. Aaah!
Woman: GP
Man: GP is a contraction for General Practitioner, and he or she is a doctor who treats all types of illnesses and works in the local community not in a hospital. If you are ill in England, you should be able to make an appointment with one of these as a temporary patient.
Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Hello, Nethergreen surgery, how can I help you?
Man: I’d like to make an appointment with the GP please.
Woman: When would you like an appointment?
Man: As soon as possible please.
Woman: Is 10am today with Doctor Norris okay?
Man: Thank you, that will be fine.
Woman: Casualty.
Man: The casualty department is the emergency department of a hospital, where people who have been injured in accidents are taken for immediate treatment.
Listen to this:
Woman: OW!
Man: What’s the matter?
Woman: I was chopping some tomatoes and I’ve sliced the top of my thumb. Ow!
Man: That’s a deep cut, look there’s blood everywhere, wrap this towel around it and get in the car, I’m taking you straight to the casualty department.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
