Phishing: the activity of sending e-mails claiming to be an authorized company, in an attempt to persuade the user to reveal private information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. The word sounds like “fishing”, because the Web is seen as a sea where criminals go fishing for information.
Phisher: the person or organization that tries to obtain private information.
To phish: to carry out the activity of phishing.
To be phished: to receive an e-mail requesting private information.
Brand spoofing/carding: synonyms for phishing.
Spam: electronic messages sent to e-mail addresses, usually as a form of marketing. Spam is also called junk mail.
Spammer: the person or organization sending spam.
Spamming: the activity of sending unwanted e-mail messages.
To spam: to send junk mail.
Spim: spam over instant messaging (IM).
Spimmer: a person or organization that sends spim.
To spim: to send spam by using an IM application.
IM marketing/instant spam: synonyms for Spim.
