FLICKR - #58499153_e0c220ec61 Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on what to prepare if you are going on holiday.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English expressions; you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to information about helpful tips on how to prepare for a holiday.
So let’s start!

Woman: Are you organised when you are going on holiday? Listen to some tips that might help you.

Woman: Packing.
Man: Packing means to put your things into a suitcase etc. before you go on holiday.
Listen to this short conversation:
Man: Have you made a list of everything we need to pack?
Woman: Yes, and I’ve already packed all the clothes you left out so don’t worry.
Man: Be careful what you pack in the hand luggage, remember the new security rules, no liquids.
Woman: What about toothpaste?
Man: I can’t remember, but it will be safer to pack all the toiletries in the suitcase, then they’ll be no confusion at the airport.

Woman: Lost
Man: Lost in this sense, means that something cannot be found.
For example
Woman: Where are our suitcases? I hope they are not lost.
Man: Keep checking the carousel, what colour is our suitcase again?
Woman: Green, and look it’s not lost, it’s coming through now, it’s the last bag on the carousel.
Man: Better late than lost heh.
Woman: Stolen
Man: Stolen is the past participle of “steal” which means to take something from a person etc. without permission or intention to return it or pay for it.
For example:
Woman: Have you put your wallet in a safe place?
Man: I certainly have, I don’t want my credit cards stolen again.
Woman: We’ll just have to be careful and look out for pick pockets this time.

Woman: Unplug
Man: Unplug is a verb which means to remove a piece of electrical equipment from the electricity supply.
For example:
Woman: Ok, everything is packed, now we just need to check the house and we can go.
Man: Well I’ve already unplugged everything, we just need to check all the windows and doors are locked properly, then we can put on the alarm and finally go on holiday.

Woman: Now let’s listen to some information about preparing to go on a holiday, adapted from www.bbc.co.uk
Are you packing? Here are a few helpful tips!
Put essential replacements in your hand luggage, in case your suitcases don’t arrive at your destination. Make photocopies of your ID and pack it separately from the original. Send yourself an email with all the important information: credit card emergency numbers, passport and driving license numbers. That way, if your documents are lost or stolen, you will be able to retrieve all your details. Do not put your valuables in the front pockets of your rucksack, or it will be very easy for someone to rob you. If you are travelling by plane, tie a coloured ribbon round the handles of your bags, so it will be easy to find them on the carousel. Before leaving the house, unplug electrical appliances, except freezer and fridge. Leave spare keys and a contact number with someone you trust.

Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
