Ristorante - Lettura - Trascrizione
Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting English on a very unusual restaurant.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful English expressions; you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to information about an under sea restaurant.
So let’s start!
Woman: All-glass
Man: All-glass means something is made entirely of glass, like an aquarium or a conservatory.
Listen to this short conversation:
Man: Shall we sit outside or inside?
Woman: Outside.
Man: Are you sure it won’t be too hot for you?
Woman: No I think it’s hotter inside, look the roof and all the walls are made of glass.
Man: That’s why the restaurant is called “All-glass”.
Woman: Beneath.
Man: Beneath means at a lower position than something, it is another word for “under”.
For example
Woman: Did you know that in the Maldives they have a restaurant beneath the sea?
Man: No, I didn’t, would you like to go?
Woman: No way! I’ve never taken the channel tunnel, as I’m scared of being trapped under the sea.
Woman: Blown away
Man: Blown away is a phrasal verb that means to be astonished.
For example:
Woman: I can’t eat another thing, that dessert has blown me away.
Man: You always say that, and yet you always order the same thing.
Woman: I know, but, it’s so amazing.
Woman: Deck
Man: A deck is a floor of a ship. It is also used to describe wooden floors of a similar design.
For example:
Woman: Which deck is the restaurant on?
Man: The 8th, I think.
Woman: Now let’s listen to some information about a very unusual restaurant adapted from www.hospitalitynet.com
The first all-glass undersea restaurant in the world has opened its doors for business in the Maldives. ‘Ithaa’ - meaning ‘pearl’ in the language of the Maldives - is located five meters beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean. Its distinctive feature is the use of curved transparent acrylic walls and roof, similar to those used in aquarium attractions, offering diners 270-degrees of panoramic underwater views. At the undersea restaurant diners can experience fine cuisine and be blown away by the colour, clarity, and beauty of the underwater world in the Maldives – without ever getting their feet wet! Diners begin their meal with drinks on a deck over the ocean and then descend to the restaurant via a spiral staircase where the à la carte menu is served. ‘Ithaa’ seats only 14 people and offers one of the most intimate and exclusive experiences in the world.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
