Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting English on how to survive a first date.
Before starting, let me first explain that in this lesson you’ll be listening to some useful English phrases, you’ll then hear a short explanation of these phrases, followed by an example of how they are used.
So let’s start!
Woman: Shall we go for a drink?
Man: The expression “Shall we..?” is very useful to make suggestions on what to do on your first date. For example:
Man: Hi, it’s a bit cold, shall we go somewhere warm?
Woman: That would be nice.
Man: Shall we go to the bar over there? It looks like a fun place.
Woman: What would you like?
Man: This is a polite way of asking someone what they want to drink or eat. Now listen:
Man: What would you like to drink?
Woman: I’d like a martini please.
Woman: Do you like this bar?
Man: This simple kind of question can be used to find out about your date’s likes and dislikes. Listen to this example
Woman: Do you like it here?
Man: It’s ok, but I’m hungry, do you like Mexican food?
Woman: I’ve never tried it before, but I don’t like fish.
Woman: Have you ever been abroad?
Man: This expression can be used to find out about your date’s past experiences. Now listen:
Woman: MMM. This tastes good. Have you been here before?
Man: Yes, I have been here a few times.
Woman: Have you ever been to Mexico?
Woman: What do you do in your free time?
Man: This is a good way to keep a conversation going and to find out about your date’s hobbies, and what kind of person they really are. For example:
Woman: What do you do in your free time?
Man: Well, when I’m not working, I go to the gym and I like travelling when I can. What about you, what do you do in your free time?
Woman: I go jogging and I love reading.
Woman: Did you enjoy the evening?
Man: This is a simple way to find out if your date likes you. Listen to this example:
Woman: I really enjoyed tonight, did you enjoy the evening?
Man: Yes, I really enjoyed myself.
Woman: Can I take your number? What are you doing next Friday?
Man: These are good questions when the end of the date is approaching, and you have to decide if you want to see each other again. Now listen to this example:
Man: Can I take your number?
Woman: You already have it.
Man: Well, what are you doing next Friday?
Woman: Aaah, I’m washing my hair….but I’ll call you………..
